Experiences with Reglan or Domperidone

If you've taken either of these what has your experience been?

I'm doing everything I can to encourage my milk supply to increase, but it isn't happening.  An LC I work with suggested I request my OB prescribe one of these for me and I think I'll call tomorrow and see if she will do so.  I just was wondering if they are generally sucessfull or if one is more sucessfull than the other.  Also, do you think I will have to see my OB to obtain a Rx?

 Any insight is appreciated :)

Re: Experiences with Reglan or Domperidone

  • I'm on domperidone.  I just get it off inhousepharmacy without a prescription.  If you get a prescription/want it from the USA, you'll have to go to a compounding pharmacy and it's uber expensive that way.  Since it's OTC in Canada, it's much cheaper to order online and have it shipped.

I started taking it at 90mg per day and was able to quit supplementing every feeding (down to no supplementing at all) within three weeks.  Now I take 30-60 mg (usually 30 because I forget in the mornings) and have no supply issues.  I would strongly recommend it to anyone who has tried everything else.

My OB would not prescribe Reglan because of the serious side effects that can accompany it.

    Here's a link about Dom. - https://www.breastfeedinginc.ca/content.php?pagename=doc-DGS

and one to the online pharmacy https://www.inhousepharmacy.biz/p-17-motilium-10mg.aspx   It's called Motilium.

  • thank you...can I ask what your issues were before going on the medication? How low was your supply and how many weeks postpartum were you? My LO is almost 2 weeks old and I'm only pumping about a half an ounce every 2 hours.  I'm afraid there may be no hope...

I didn't have my milk come in until day 10 and by then he had lost a lot of weight.  I didn't start this medication until he was 3 months old.  I saw an LC for weighted feeds and it was determined through weighted feeds that he was only getting about an ounce from me per feeding.  We were supplementing with 3 oz of formula each feeding.  I still don't pump much though.  Pumping is not a reliable way to determine how much milk you are making.  Some women just don't respond well to the pump.  You need to do a weighted feed on a very accurate scale (weigh, feed, weigh) to see how many ounces of milk baby is getting from the breast.  Babies can "pump" out much more than a pump.  Also, is baby losing weight or not gaining weight?  Is he/she having an accurate amount of poopy/pee diapers per day?  At two weeks, he/she is probably only eating about 2 oz per feeding anyhow.  Pumping 1/2 an ounce sounds about right.  I'd see a different LC if I were you.  Not all LC's are created equal.  If baby is gaining/healthy/good amount of dirty diapers, then you are golden.  Other than pumping, what makes you think your supply is low?

AmyG- the wonder women of breastfeeding on here- will also tell you to see your physician to check for retained placenta and thyroid levels, because both issues can cause low milk supply.

  • One day on Rey an made it clear to me that the sde effects would make it impossible for me to care for an infant while taking it. I got domperidone online and it didn't have the awful si effects. I took it with ds1 but haven't needed it with ds2. I actually just tossed out like three boxes of it today when i was cleaning out my cabinet.

  • My son stopped gaining  weight from about 8 weeks to about 16 weeks. My ds would get very fussy in the evening and push the breast away and scream. After weeks of being told nothing was wrong, I was told by an LC to start supplementing, using a supplemental nursing system and take fenugreek, blessed thistle and get a prescription for domperidone right away. The first two days I went through 22oz of frozen bm a day (my entire stash) and had.  to start using formula. After a week on all 3, I stopped the herbs because the were $$ and I only need to supplement about 4oz a day (which I can even pump sometimes). In about 3 mos he has gained about 8lbs now.

I would not have taken reglan because I am scared about it causing depression which would be easy at such and exhausting time.

  • I was totally scared into trying to induce lactation (for our adopted baby) without the use of these drugs by my RE (fertility doctor) and my Primary Care physician, but after a month of taking herbs, pumping every 2-3 hours, weekly acupuncture, hypnosis, eating oatmeal, drinking beer, and drinking mothers milk tea I am still just getting a few little drops.

After doing my own research for the last few weeks I have decided to give this a try. I just ordered Domperidone and will start it when we know for sure that this WILL be OUR baby (24-48 hours after birth).

The day after we came home from the hospital I realized she was not having any bm's and she was screaming when I tried to put her to the breast. I was so exhausted and scared (taking her home was a little more culture shock than I expected) so I called the LC.  She asked us to bring her in and when we did we discovered she was 10oz lighter than than when we left the hospital the day before.  They weighed her to check her intake and she only took in about 2ml on one side and 4 on the other.  I pumped very little more than that.  They told us to begin supplementing 2oz formula at every feeding after putting her to each breast for 15 minutes and pumping for 15 minutes.  Two subsequent trips to her ped. showed proper weight gain and by last MOnday she was back to the weight she was the day we left the hospital.  However, when we went to the LC on Wed.  she was 2 oz lighter than that weight and the LC kind of tore into me.

When she asked how many times I a day I was feeding her I said 6....well turns out this is the equivilent of child abuse because she made me feel like crap and told me she has to eat at least 8 times a day and get 24oz.  I tried to tell her that the baby will not wake and eat that many times, but she made it sound like it wasn't an option.  She also told me that my breasts are "tubuler" and that's a red flag which probably means I won't ever make enough milk to feed her.  By this time I was crying and feeling like a failure, but we did the intake weight and total with putting her to the breast and pumping it was an output of 25ml. I left there with instruction to continue with the original plan but to feed her at least 8 times a day and empty my breasts at least 8 times a day.  The next day at the peds. office they weighed her and lo and behold she was 5oz heavier than the last time we had been there (4 days ago) and 7 oz heavier than they said at the LC.  Her ped. told me it is NOT necessary to torture her to wake her and get 8 feedings in, she's perfectly healthy and growing fine, and that 6 feedings at 3oz per feeding is fine with him.

SO....now she's demanding at least 3oz per feeding (which I do not make) but I have no clue how low my supply is because I have nothing to compare to.

  • Sorry to hear about the issues, but girl- she is absolutely beautiful!!! So glad you uploaded a pic. Just a sidenote- because of issues I've read on this board I am already thinking about buying Dom in advance to have it on hand... the online pharmacy that someone mentioned above seems to have the best price/reputation.

     Good luck!

  • I'm on day 5 of Dom and I have notice an increase already.  I have a similar story to the ladies on here.  No or little weight gain, and she was getting under 2oz when she nursed with breast compression.

No one in my area will prescribe it.  My LC isn't even allowed to suggest it because she works for a hospital.  A private LC suggested it to me.  I also got it from inhousepharmacy.  I have had zero side effects.  Just made more milk.  I am excited to see how it keeps increasing over the next few weeks.

My OB will not prescribe reglan anymore because of the side effects.  I hope you can find something that works out.  I know how frustrating this can be !
