If you've pureed carrots...

I pureed some cooked carrots and they are very chunky- are they undercooked or is my food processor not up to par?

  • Same thing happened to me. I think it was because the food processor was too big and I didn't do a big enough batch of carrots? I'm interested to see what others say.

  • I had to bake them, pur?e them, bake again, then pur?e one more time and added quite a bit of milk.

  • I wouldn't say they were super smooth..but smooth enough. I just steamed mine really well and then added the water from the pot into them to help make them smoother (that's where all the vitamins are anyway when they are in water like that)

  • I had this problem. Just add more liquid and pulse or puree for a long time. That worked for me.

I read that with carrots you shouldn't use the water they were cooked in due to their higer level of nitrates (but for all other vegetables you should because, as you said, it's full of vitamins).  I had to add quite a lot of fresh water to my carrots to get a smooth texture...she loves them!

EDIT: thought I should point out that in a baby who is 6 months the nitrates really aren't that big a deal though...it's more dangerous in younger babies who shouldn't be eating solids yet anyway.

  • I steamed them with the brezza for 25 mins and then blended for a bit.

He was not a fan. He would only eat them mixed with cereal.

  • I used the blender with a lot of water.  I have found that my food processor does not get the food smooth enough.  I'll probably use it when he needs more texture in his food, but the blender works best for now.

Also, as PP said, don't use the water from steaming carrots to blend them due to high nitrate levels.  All other fruits/veggies are fine, but use fresh water when blending up carrots.

  • Thanks- I added a little water and pureed for much longer and it got smoother.  And Maya loved them- but they were quite a bit messier than the avocado!
