Train and car toys for 4yo boy?

My former foster son is 4-1/2. I'm trying to figure out what to get him for Christmas. I talked to him last night and he said he wants "a train, pajamas and a car." I'm at a loss. We bought him a train table and tons of trains when he lived with us. His dad keeps it in the basement and he's afraid to go down there and play with it. Any ideas of any train toys that don't go with a train track? I was thinking a remote control car too. Any recommendations for that? TIA!

Ds likes Thomas metal trains...he plays with them on the wood floors without a track. He also likes matchbox cars and any kind of car carrier/car combo or construction stuff. Ds has a train table but never plays with it. He drags all  his crap out into the middle of the wood floors and plays right in our way.

ds likes his geotrax and thomas trackmasters (the trains can work without the track on the floor or short carpet too)

ds also has a remote controlled monster truck that he loves.

take n' go or take n' play Thomas sets and trains.  Those are smaller and fold up so he could play with it upstairs.  My kids have the trains for those and they take those all over the house without tracks.
