October 2011 Moms

Lets talk about smiling

Does your baby smile yet- like real, full, wide awake smiles? At what age did they start doing it and how often do they smile?

Baby girl is 7 weeks old today and she does smile, but not very often, and its very random and hard to get her to smile. I feel like other people's babies are smiling a lot more than her and am wondering if it is something I should be concerned about...I know I know I can't compare her to everyone else, but I just want her to be a happy girl and her smile is pretty much the most amazing thing in the world and I'm just wondering what is "normal" at this age.

Re: Lets talk about smiling

  • Wes smiles a TON now, but even a week or so ago i was concerned because I felt he wasn't smiling enough. Things change pretty quickly in babyland.

  • DD #2 has been smiling from the beginning, it's adorable she smiles with her mouth, her eyes squint and her ears move.  It usually happens when she's either sleeping or half asleep (not social smiles yet).  DD #1 started smiling at 6 weeks and we only had the occasional smile until maybe 2 weeks later when she started giving us lots of them.  It sounds like your LO is right on track!

  • Lilah is smiling, but we don't know if they are real smiles or just gas...

  • Don't be concerned. My LO hasn't had a social smile at all yet. I've read that it usually doesn't happen until after 8 weeks or so.

  • About a week and a half ago, Samuel started smiling big silly smiles. I decided they weren't gas anymore when he started making little sounds when he smiled. Like a weird chuckle, almost, but not, haha.

  • DS has just gotten so he's smiling more frequently in the last week or so.  The last couple days he's even been smiling in response to things (like his crazy mom singing a silly song, lol).  I'm hoping the giggles aren't far behind, he does those in his sleep now.

It sounds like you're daughter is right on track with her smiles to me.

  • Trust me, it's always something - once LBB started smiling DH has been feeling like LBB smiles at everyone but him.  Yesterday my mom came down to babysit and DH was jealous because LBB lit up when she got here and wouldn't stop smiling and cooing at her.

  • LO just started smiling in reaction to things last week, and usually only first thing in the morning.  Now it's a competition between DH and I over who can get the morning smile.  But I got lucky today, I took her shopping and she was grinning away at the clothes -- takes after her mommy!

  • Im in the same boat as you, my little man smiles but it's random and few and far between.  You shouldn't be worried at all, as long as she is smiling, that's what is important.  I'm impatient too and want my little guy to hurry up and smile on comand for me, so i can get a picture of it already!

  • LO just started smiling at us during this past week. Only in the morning though - the evenings at the height of fussiness right now!

  • No smiles here yet either!  I am also a little concerned.  We get some random passing ones when she's asleep but nothing social while she's awake.  Maybe our babies are just waiting for something really funny to happen!

  • I have not had any social smiles yet. I cant wait. They are so cute when he sleeps and does them. He even has a laugh when he smiles in his sleep. I really want to see it awake.

  • I wouldnt be concerned at all yet! Luke is smiling, but its hard to get one out of him sometimes! Your LO will start smiling more and more!

  • He started smiling on Saturday - as in smiles in response to me and/or things he likes (he smiles at the dog A LOT - I start feeling a bit weird about that). Before that there would be random smiles, but nothing directed. Don't worry too much....
