Swaddling

Are you swaddling? How long do you plan to swaddle? Little man is so freaking long he breaks out of any swaddle. He is also a mastermind at getting his arms out of his sleep sack. Sometimes he naps unswaddled, wondering if its okay to do it at bedtime, too.

Re: Swaddling

  • Yeah I started swaddling with his legs out. But he just ends up unwrapping the whole thing in his sleep.

  • We swaddle, but don't use swaddle blankets because he gets out of them too easy.  We use the halo sleepslack that has velcro and just make it real tight.  We swaddle him every night, but not during the day.

  • DS hates being swaddled, so we wrap tightly under his armpits and leave it loose at the feet. It gives him that "hug" feeling while allowing those little arms and legs to flail as they please.

  • We thought DD hated being swaddled so we didn't do it for 3 weeks.  Then at my "mommy and me" class they suggested trying again to get her to sleep for longer stretches at night.  So we tried the sleep sack again with her arms in and it's been working!  She no longer fights us being swaddled.

She doesn't necessarily sleep any longer (still 3-4 hours tops at a time) but she seems to sleep more soundly during that time, allowing us to sleep more soundly.  If they are able to flail their legs and arms, they are more likely to wake themselves up.

  • We've gone back and forth on the swaddling. Around week 3 it seemed like she was fighting it all the time, so I kind of gave up for a few days, but then brought it back out of desperation for some sleep. Around week 5 I stopped swaddling again and she'a sleeping much better. So basically, the swaddle may or may not have helped in the early weeks, but it seems like C was never that into it and it didn't help much - sleep just naturally started improving.

  • I was just wondering today when we should transition from the swaddle to the sleep sack.  She slithers her way out of the swaddle so the blanket is still fully wrapped in the lower half of the bassinet and she is up at the top, uncovered.

  • We did in the beginning because we were told it's the thing to do and it would frustrate her more than anything. She would grunt and squirm until her arms were free.  We haven't done it since she was 5 days old and she's sleeping much better. She'll sleep 4-6 hours at a time at night, so I don't need to swaddle her to sleep better.
  • Hm I want to try not swaddling him. But if I lay him down unswaddled, he wakes up and flails his arms, almost as if he is losing his ballance.

  • My LO also wakes herself up too and she was escaping my swaddle before. I started using this technique a few days ago...she fights it at first but I did get a 6.5 hr stretch of sleep out of her last night. Its worth a try!!

  • Thanks for this post. Seems like many of you do as I do. We only swaddle at night and only from the arm pits down.  If I do his arms, he grunts and groans and FIGHTS it!

Not sure how long we'll do it...but probably as long as he'll fit!

  • I swaddle at night and anytime she's fussing and fighting sleep during the day. I'll probably stop swaddling once she starts sleeping through the night.

  • I just read an interesting article on swaddling. https://mothering.com/parenting/the-question-of-routine-swaddling

We don't swaddle and she sleeps on her belly.
