Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Rear facing carseat question

I REALLY want to keep DD rear facing as long as possible, but her legs are really starting to bunch up in her carseat now (we have a Britax Marathon 65 which is a large seat) She is average height for 18 months, but still very skinny at 22lbs. She is starting to freak out because  she doesnt like her legs all bunched up.

Is there a way to keep her fitting better in the seat? Do I have it in wrong?

    Cross her legs.

Tried this, not so easy with her winter boots on now. I guess I could take her boots off in the car, but what a pita

  • Jake sometimes puts his legs up higher on the back of the seat so they can be straight. DH is always commenting on how cramped he is, but I keep telling him it doesn't matter. Hopefully Jake doesn't start fighting it though!

lol my DH is always telling me she's too big and she's going to break a leg. My reponse is always that I would rather her break her leg than her neck. That usually stops the commenting til the next outing. DD did that with her legs before too, but now she pushes off with her feet and refuses to sit and screams bloody murder when I finally get her buckled in. She's very stubborn too, I've driven up to 45 mins with her wailing the whole time.

  • I think she will figure it out. I think we as parents wrongly assume that our kids are uncomfortable rear-facing. My DD rear-faced until 2, forward faced until 2.5 and then rear-faced until just a few months ago. This is a picture of her rear-facing in March. She was probably about 25/26lbs or so and 37" tall. She asked to be rear-facing at 2.5, so I turned her back rear-facing.  She either put her legs like in the picture or put them up on the back seat.

This.  It would have to be pretty bad for me to turn DD around before she reaches 2.

Same,  DH has only ever cried that horrible torturous OMG what is wrong with my baby cry, when awake in the car for longer than 10 mins. I did six 2 hour (round trip) trips with him last week due to family emergencies....it still wasn't enough to make me turn him. I cried halfway home on the highway the last trip begging him to forgive me...but my gut still says no way. FWIW he's 32 pounds and 35 inches.

Wow! He is a big guy! I thought my DS was big and he is just over 32" and 24lbs.

Her chest clip is way too high in this picture.

Car seat safety is a lot more than just keeping them rear facing.  Sorry I am a b!tch but so many of you harp on the RF then seeing pictures like this make me laugh.  The chest clip should be at armpit level not choking her.  Just sayin'.

  • Just bumping this so we can all discuss how car seat safety is a lot more than positioning of seat.

The funny thing is that every other time I have posted this pic.... I have mentioned that her clip is too high. I am aware of where it needs to be. Thanks though.....

  • When you post that picture you should always include your disclaimer. You wouldn't want anyone to think it is safe to improperly strap their child in. Insert eye roll...

This is completely laughable to me. I am not sure what your "issue" is with me, but I am sure you could find better things to worry about.

I have no issue with you at all. I just find the entire argument about rear facing to be ridiculous considering how few people practice all other car seat safety guidelines.
