Teething and cold symptoms?

Anyone have a LO that had cold symptoms when teething?  I was told this might be a possibility for DS.

Background:  He's had a low-grade fever for almost two months, he's done two rounds of antibiotics (pedi thought it might be a persistent sinus infection) and he recommended that I give DS allergy meds to help the congestion.  The allergy meds did clear up the congestion which was good but he's still got a low-grade fever (normally around 99.5).  He's not drooling like he did with his other teeth but I did notice yesterday that finally two new molars are coming in.

He's in a good mood, happy, rambunctious as usual, so I don't think its a cold or sinus infection.

He has no history of "colds" while teething in the past, and there hasn't been anything new introduced in our home, so while the allergy meds are working for congestion, I don't know that he's got *allergies* (if that makes sense).

Thoughts/ideas?

  • Why is it that you're always posting about either getting, being, or feeling drunk, woman???  LOL!  (I hope you know I'm just joking around!)

So, if this is normal (I mean, what other explanation could it be,right?), should I continue to give him the allergy meds?  The pedi actually gave us an Rx for Zyrtec and it was for 12 refills (a whole year??), so I'm assuming its safe.  I'm ok with giving it to him for a little while while he's working through the teething, but I'm not going to give it to him for a whole frikkin' year!  WTF??  (It wouldn't be WTF-worthy if DS actually had allergies and needed it, but I don't think that's the case.)

So far so good on no ear infections, but I will keep an eye out for that.  Thanks!

Oh, and here ya go - Drinks

  • Same for Ari, except he has seasonal allergies so his congestion gets really out of hand. He's never had an ear infection though, knock on wood. I read somewhere that teething can cause swelling of the sinus cavity, especially molars, which is what causes the ear infections & runny nose.

This makes sense and I'm going to ask about it on Monday when I talk to the pedi.  Thanks!

Hahaha that actually made me laugh out loud. I don't know, the funny thing is I really don't drink that often, especially while TTC but good god almighty this cold medicine made me feel loopy. I also may have taken it in conjunction with some anti-nausea meds.

Plus I was a sorority girl, and you can take the girl out of the sorority, but ya can't take the sorority outta the girl, especially on a Friday night. Wink

Now back to our kids- I don't know that I'd give him the medicine unless he seems like he really needs it. Does it knock him out? Our pedi gave us claritin, and I have only given it to him three times in the last month. If he's really congested and seems uncomfortable then I give it. It definitely helps him sleep.

I hope baby Geek feels better!

What do you consider "not that often"?  That is really the question at hand here, isn't it?  Wink

Nope, the meds don't knock him out, so that's good.  How do you handle eating/drinking when your DS is that congested?  DS has such a hard time getting enough to eat or drink because he can barely breathe.  A few days before we started giving him the allergy meds he only had about 4oz of fluid all day for 3 or 4 days and as soon as he started getting cleared up, he started going to town on fluids.

Does Baby Geek like soup or yogurt? Jack DEVOURS that yo toddler yogurt with the cereal in the bottom. The on call nurse told me to give him some soup, like a vegetable soup with a chicken broth to get the nutrients in him as well as fluids. It's a huge mess if he doesn't feel like letting me spoon feed him, but it works.

Oh and for some odd reason Jack lives for grape pedialyte. I break our general rule of no sippy cups upstairs when he's sick and let him have it all day, just to ensure he's getting some hydration.

BG would eat yogurt all day, if I let him (especially the "Yo" stuff).  That and corn.  I thought the rule was to avoid dairy when congested, though?  I'll have to give soup a try again.  He goes through phases where he'll eat nothing but applesauce and then decide he doesn't "like" it for weeks and then goes on another a/s kick.  Same thing for soup.  I'll try that tomorrow, though, and see how it goes!  Thanks for the tips!!

Its funny that Jack lives for only the grape pedialyte!  I haven't tried that one with DS yet (mostly because this is really the only time he's been 'sick-ish').
