Am I the only one....

not getting a growth u/s?  I am a little jealous of all these ladies getting estimates of babies weight/size even though I know they can be off.  I havent had an u/s since 18weeks Sad.

Re: Am I the only one....

  • You're not alone.  I had an u/s at 18 weeks and they won't do another one unless they suspect a problem.  So, yay - no suspected problem!  Boo - no idea of the weight or size of our LOs!

  • I didnt know anything about growth ultrasounds at first. i thought you got 2 and that was it unless there was a problem. then i noticed alot of girls on here getting them done and then at my last appointment they told me they would be doing one around 36 weeks to check on his size. They went ahead and did one early and told me they would be doing another the closer i get to my due date. Like i said i had no idea they did those!

  • I think most people who get them have other issues going on.

I had one when I was in the hospital a couple of weeks ago to try to see if they could find a reason I was in PTL. If it wasn't for that, my last u/s would have been at 20w.

  • I'm not having one, its pretty common not to get one if you have had a "normal" pregnancy and have had on target measurements.

  • I'm not scheduled to get one either!

  • I am not getting growth ultrasounds and am glad, no reason to get freaked out about the size when they are so inaccurate! It is nice seeing the LO though, we had one of those ultrasounds that wasn't at a docs office around 34 weeks and it was fun.

  • The last ultrasound I had was in July.  Next one will be at 37 weeks and I can't wait to see my little guy again!

  • I'm only getting one because my babies head and abdomen are measuring weeks ahead and they are worried about my amniotic fluid levels being too low to go the full 40 weeks.

  • You aren't missing out on much, baby is do cramped at this stage in the game you can't even make out what you are looking at. Most of the time they only do a growth u/s if they suspect something is amiss, so its good to not have one! I have had a ton of ultrasounds due to placenta previa so when they check for position they do growth as well. If it weren't for my previa who knows if I would have had a third.tri u/s
  • Nope, I have no plans to get any other u/s besides the a/s I had at 19 weeks.

  • My only u/s was 20w. Unless some complication comes up, I won't get getting any more
  • I'm not. I asked my OB at my appointment two weeks ago and he said unless you are high risk or have some type of problem they only give you two - one to confirm the pregnancy and one for the sex/anatomy. I'm kinda sad too

  • No. With DS I an u/s at 19 weeks, then not another one. This pregnancy I had one at 20 weeks, 31, and will have one again at 38, but the last 2 only because of my total placenta previa. I would not have another one after the 20th week if I did not have it.

  • I have had 3 u/s and that was only because the babies femur was measuring short. The last one was last week at 36weeks and it appears it has caught up to the rest of the body.I'm very relieved.Like others have said I think they only do the additional u/s when they are worried about something.

  • Definitely not alone - I don't think they do them in canada unless there is some sort of concern with the baby - my dr doesn't even do internals unless there are concerns.

  • I only had one U/S at 20 weeks and their are no plans on having another one.  My pregnancy has been normal and my doc doesn't see any reason to have another one.

  • I'm not having one either. I actually had an additional u/s around 28 weeks when I was in L&D with abdominal pain, but the doctor was a bit more preoccupied with finding out what was happening than taking pictures or guessing size. Stick out tongue

Oh well, only 3 more weeks or so and I can see her little face in person rather than on a grainy u/s.

  • I only had one this week because DS was breech when he came at 35 weeks. We live 3.5 hours from the nearest maternity hospital so if this one was breech we'd basically be ordering the helicopter as soon as I went into labour. Thankfully, he has his head down and is 3 fifths engaged so we can relax a little bit.

For those that don't have late u/s, try not to be bummed, the 20 week scan is WAY better, you can see so much more. It's nice to see LO again but it's nowhere near as clear as the earlier one.

  • No u/s for me since 19 weeks and I most likely won't have any more either. Honestly, I'm kinda glad they aren't monitoring it because it means he's growing just fine. Also, I think I would get anxious knowing how much he weighs and worrying about if he's "too big" or "too small".

  • be glad you're not having them. I have them about 1x a week & they make me feel like such a bad person because its always due to weight gain issues. Im not gaining but the baby is & they always make it seem like the end of the world if I dont get one....

  • I don't get any ultrasounds unless something goes wrong. My last one was 18 weeks. I don't even get internals till 38 weeks

  • No! And I am jealous too! It seems very logical to me to check on the growth! Especially since everyone tells me I'm so small (really I'm just tall and it's all evenly distributed in my ass and hips) and it makes me nervous. I asked my NP how much my baby weighs and what position she is in and she could only give me guesses. I suppose there is no need to know anything at this point but MAN it would help quell all this anxiousness I am having and help with ALL the unknown. Anyway, I guess we're lucky to have healthy pregnancies.

P.S. I have SO many friends that were completely healthy pregnancies that had pre-term babies at 33-35 weeks. I feel like if they started internals earlier these could have been prevented...no? I get my internal at 38...

  • The reason I'm having growth ultrasounds is because my fundal height is consistently measuring big, so they want to check the size of the baby to make sure nothing is wrong. Fortunately, he's perfect, just a chunker! They also make recommendations on c-section/induction based on the growth ultrasounds, for macrosomia.

  • My doctor doesnt actually do the later ultrasound for growth only.  She does a scan at 36 weeks to check placenta, cord pulse and fluid levels.

  • They only do one where I am from, I've had two though. One at 20 weeks and then another at 29. The only reason I've had a second one is their is a choroid plexus cyst on the left ventricle of my babies brain. It's still there but there are no other warning signs so they said they will just keep an eye on it. I haven't been referred for anymore ultrasounds though.

  • I will not be getting another u/s so long as everything keeps going okay with the baby.
