August 2011 Moms

My LO is always cold, according to my mother.

So as my subject says, my mother is always insisting that LO is cold.  Her hands, her feet, etc.  She is always suggesting I layer her, more specifically, put her in a onesie under ALL of her outfits.  I get it- it's getting colder, but I don't ALWAYS think it's necessary to add the onesie under everything.  So my question... Do you layer with a onesie?  Is this a standard thing to do?  Is it like a bra and underwear to us, or like an undershirt for men? Lol.

Re: My LO is always cold, according to my mother.

  • I did this for about a week. My guy runs so warm despite having cold hands and feet. MH's parents are convinced he's cold all the time, but he isn't! Someone on here said that babies have poor circulation and that's what I'm attributing the cold hands/feet to. My guy is not cold!

  • I'm in TX, so yeah, I'd bake my son if I layered him right now lol.

However, the general rule is to dress baby in one more layer than you would wear. If that means putting a onesie on under everything then go for it. Touching hands/feet to gauge how cold or warm DC is isn't a good way to check as most babies have poor circulation. It's better to put your hand under their clothes to check temp.

  • Our LO's hands and feet tend to be a cold but like Mish said its poor circulation (all babies have this). Our LO is always warm so if I layer him he will get fussy because he is too warm. Trust me you will know if your LO is too warm or too cold. Smile

  • Thanks ladies!  Yes, I read about the cold hands/feet thing due to poor circulation, but my mother just doesn't buy it!  And she's an RN, haha.  Anyhoo, yes, I think just trying it out is best.

  • I put a onesie under outfits that have 2 separate pieces, like a shirt and pants. If the outfit is a onesie and pants, then I don't layer. I used to, but that was before I figured out LO is a hot little kid like I was.
  • My DS has started sweating so I've been more careful lately about over dressing him. My mom is the SAME way. She's always talking about how cold he is. Then one day a couple of weeks ago I dressed him in a onesie and a sleeper that was made out of sweatshirt material (because I was going to her house and knew she would complain about how cold he must be) and she decided he was too hot!! I can't win.

  • I do it because she's always lifting up her shirts/dresses and it is definitely too cold for her to go about with her tummy exposed like that. Plus onesies are a great barrier in case of a poopsplosion - I'd much rather ruin one than ruin an outfit!

  • TBH, I onesie layer all LO's outfits... Unless it's really just too warm.

  • My mom actually asked me to dress DS is LESS on Mondays when she goes over to my grandpas house with DS. He keeps the house at 80 and poor DS was soooo uncomfortably warm last week. My mom finally changed him into a short sleeve outfit and he was much happier

I do put a onsie under some things if it's pretty cold out, but honestly, how is an extra onsie going to keep you lo's hands and feet warm??

I think she believes if the rest of her body is warmer, it will help to warm up her hands and feet. :)

Thanks everyone for your input.  I'll just continue to use my good old common sense about the layering!
