I broke down and am letting her CIO. Nap times have been a disaster...well pretty much always. I don't get anything done with her napping in my arms and laying down with her doesn't work anymore.
Sooo, with pediatrician's blessing I am letting her CIO, comforting her every five minutes or so (gradually longer each time). It has never taken more than 20 min so far.
Since naps have been all over the map, its hard to gauge how sleep is "normal" for her. She consistently sleeps 11-12 hours a night. She slept 30 min nap this am. And an hour just now but woke up crabby and throwing a progressively louder fit (I waited about ten minutes before going in the room). I changed her and put her back down....she's still crying...not fussing, CRYING. She's still tired, right? That may seem like a duh. But reassure me.
Re: Napping and CIO
She may be tired, but that doesn't mean she'll go back to sleep. I never had success with CIO extending naps. It worked okay for putting Ro down, but never worked for extensions, so I'd just go get her when she woke up.
ETA: Also, at this point naps are awesome! Ro regularly takes 2, 1.5 hour naps, sometimes longer. That is why I am writing in past tense. It does get better I promise. Naps were horrendous between 4 and 7 months.
Scout, are you doing 2 or 3 naps a day? I am shooting for two, but three cat naps has been closer to our norm. Of course, I've read varying examples of what is normal at this age.
Once we got night sleep straightened out, I started CIO for naps. We was using Ferber, but DS does better if I just let him go with no checks. Before we started training I would have to rock, shush, magic Seahorse, etc for up to 40 minutes and then hold him for the whole nap. Sometimes even that wouldn't work.
It took about a week and now he's an okay napper. His first nap is great- he goes down for 60-90 minutes. After that...meh...maybe we get 1 or 2 thirty minute naps.
If she slept an hour, she is probably tired, but not tired enough to go back to sleep. I would get her up and try for another nap in two hours or so.
Wait. Do we have the same child? DS is in his crib doing the same thing right now.
Of course it doesn't help that every time he starts to get quiet one of the stupid dogs starts barking.
I have two dumba$$ terriers that are own some of the crappy/napping/habits responsibility. They barked at the wind today. I never thought I would be an electric shock collar person, but some days its tempting...
