Using dresser as a changing table

Is there a certain depth that a dresser should be to be used as a changing table? We plan to find a dresser on craigslist and fix it up/paint it to use as the changing table. But I didn't know if there was a certain depth/width that it should be so that the changing pad fits on top. Just wanted to have measurements of what size the dresser should be before we start scouring the internet! Thanks ladies!

  • I'm using a dresser too.  I haven't measured mine but the changing pad looks like it will fit.  I guess I will have to measure it!

  • I would look up a changing pad on BRU or BBB and see what the measurements are of the pad. Then you can judge accordingly.

  • We had a dresser we were going to use by it was too narrow. We have the land of nod changer top and it is 17.5" wide. The dresser we end up getting is about 21" so there is enought room on both sides.

  • My sister used the Ikea Hemnes 3 drawer dresser as thier changing table so I looked up the measurements on that to use as a guide.
  • Hello.  We are using the dresser for a changing table and found a sliding top add on at Bellini furniture that works perfectly for us.  It attaches (via an l-bracket) to most dressers and slides out to create a full-sized changing table.  We bought it from Bellini furniture (www.bellini.com).  You'll see the slide top on their front page attached to the dresser to the left of the photo.

    Good luck!

  • We used the 8 drawer Ikea Hemnes dresser as our changing table and found it was the perfect depth to fit a changing pad and still have a little room on either side in case the pad shifted. The depth is 20 1/8"

I would do this. You can bring the pad with you to look and try it out on whatever piece you find to see if it feels right to you.

  • I did the same thing (Craigslist dresser that I repainted) and compared sizes to the Hemnes dresser from Ikea that everyone was using.  I love the dresser and it works perfectly for changing!
