The pool noodle idea is awesome!!  Right now I have 3 pillows along the wall, they are pretty flat and old so I have them folded in the crack along the wall.

And we converted the crib to a full but it is SO high off the ground, so we have the boxspring/mattress on the floor, but there is a wood slat along the side that hurts if you bump it.  It is lined with a towel but a pool noodle with a slit in it would be perfect!  

So glad I read your post.. now the question is if I can find a pool noodle this time of year

We just got ours at Walmart last month! Dh had to ask for them but they still had them in stock in back. I found them online first. These are a touch bigger than the ones he uses at swim class too...bonus! He doesn't even know what they are really for, I slipped them under the fitted sheet and they stay put.

You could also use pipe insulation tubes from HD or Lowes, they already have a sliced side. That is what my mom used when I had a waterbed (yup, had a twin waterbed at 6 yrs old), instead of buying padded side rails. The noodles are larger in diameter though and work well for what we needed them for.
