Baby Names

Orson vs. Judah

I saw the name Orson on here yesterday, liked it, and mentioned it to DH last night. He, surprisingly, didn't shoot it down. He said something like "hmmm... that could grow on me."

Anyway, if DD had been a boy, we would have named her Judah Christopher (Christopher is my DH's name), which DH still very much loves. I love it, too, but I love several names (and am a baby name-aholic and can't stop looking)!

My general criteria is that it should be gender specific and uncommon. Obviously, Orson is less common than Judah. Would you consider Judah too trendy?

Does Orson Alan (Alan is DH's middle name) work? It's a little sing-songy but that doesn't bother me I don't think.

FWIW, DD is Noelle Irene, and our last name is 1 syllable starting with J. So, which would you use - Orson or Judah?

Re: Orson vs. Judah

  • Orson is NMS, and I think Judah is a great name. But does it go well with your one syllable J last name?

I agree Orson Alan makes me think of Ethan Allen for some reason...but im weird.

Orson Christopher sounds great to me.

  • My ds is a Judah, and I know one other one.  And I also know 2 Orsons.  So in my world they are equally popular.  I think they are very different types of names.  Initially Orson was NMS (when I met my first Orson).  It has grown on me but I still prefer Judah.  Judah is a biblical name - I'm not sure how it could be classified as trendy.

Good to know! I've never heard the name outside of Orson Wells, lol.

And, I guess maybe I meant popular rather than trendy. I've never met a Judah before but hear it talked about a lot more. Either way, I love Hebrew names, and the meaning of the name Judah is meaningful to us.

  • I really like Judah, though I feel like it's growing in popularity. Orson does immediately make me think of Orson Wells, but I think it can grow on me, too. Definitely wouldn't roll my eyes at a kid named Orson.

  • Orson Welles.

I absolutely love Judah. Love it. I don't think it's trendy at all.

  • Orson, I think of Orson Welles.  And all the Judahs I know are devout Jews, so there's that.  I'd go with Orson.

  • Orson sounds kind of country to me, which doesn't really make sense because I don't think Orson Welles was country at all.  I like Judah.

  • I really like both names. I give the edge to Orson. I don't think the combination of Orson Allen is awesome, but it's fine. People don't use their full name very often anyway.
  • Wasnt there a pig named Orson? Orson totally reminds me of a pig for some reason.

  • Although I think Orson has an appeal to it, all I can think of is arson or arsenic when I say it out loud. Judah is a great name though and not trendy at all!

  • Wasn't there a character on Desperate Housewives named Orson?

Honestly, I like Judah a 100 times more then Orson.
I just picture the huge shadow of Orson Welles. Wouldn't want that correlation to my kid. On top of that, I don't think Judah is popular at all. Perhaps Jonah or Jude, but not Judah, at least in my neck of the woods.

Ahhh! Who knew? Thank you so much for the insight everyone.

So glad to see all of the love for Judah. You have renewed my resolve to use it for our first boy :)
