So I've got my midwife on my *** list now, after I told her my weight today and she said "whoa! you been hungry this week? eating a lot of candy??" Um, no actually. It is 45 degrees out and I'm wearing pants instead of shorts, and a sweater, and also been having trouble with my bowel movements this week when I hadn't. But I'm 37 weeks pregnant, is it really a good time to be chiding me about weight gain? She is one of 4 midwives and I haven't seen her in a few mos, I remember her making a deal out of it last time.
My husband said and it's true, that I like everything else about her. But she fixates on weight gain every visit and then I feel guilty, like I'm doing a really bad job being pregnant. Makes me question her logic/interactive patterns in general and how she'll be at the birth...
So anyway, that was my morning...
Re: Weight comments from doctor or midwife?
SOrry she is giving you a hard time. My dr was a little bit untill I asked him if he thought I was putting my child in danger. He laughed and said no he was just concerned that I would get depressed after not being able to lose the weight. Since that conversation he has benn really sweet about my gain.
Hope it goes better next time. Only a few more weeks
I'm in a practice with 3 OBs. I HATE one of them and pray that she won't end up being my delievering OB.
That being said I'm not sure how any midwife/doctor's get away with the weight comments. I haven't been in that situation but can't imagine how I'd react. I'd probably rip her a new one! It's obvious she runs into this situation a lot...she handles it horribly! If she medically HAD to say something then she shouldn't be accusing you of eating junk food and candy when she doesn't have a clue!
Personally, I would ask her flat out, "is my weight gain a medical concern? If so, why?"
The only time I think it's truly necessary for a medical professional to question weight gain is if it is a medcial issue/concern or if the patient brings it up first.
Good idea! I should ask what the medical issue is. If so, she shouldn't bring it up.
I gained 45 lbs with my first child and lost it all very easily just from nursing in the next 6 mos. So I'm never concerned
There's a solution for people like that - the ONE FINGER SALUTE!!
Seriously, that's when you need to fire back "If you're that concerned about my weight gain to this extent without having checked if I've had any changes to my diet/activity levels, you might want to instead run a thyroid panel or blood sugar level... OR face the fact that there is a growing child in this belly who goes through growth spurts!"..
