Help with Gemma !

Ok so I see this name everywhere on this board and I have no idea how to pronounce it ! I've been assuming it is pronounced with a soft G, but that pronunciation just makes me think of aunt jemima maple syrup. Am I missing something here ?

I don't get why so many people like that name if it's pronounced like that.

The syrup is pronounced Jeh-MIME-ah.  Not remotely close to GEM-mah IMO.

  • yes thank you i know how to pronounce the syrup. when i think of someone saying "oh hey gemma" to me its waayyy too close to the syrup. just my opinion. its not a good name and will be old news in like 2 years when every kid with this name is addicted to pancakes.

  • I don't like it but I don't really see the relationship to Aunt Jemima. As Jemima is Juh-my-muh. I'd actually never even heard the name until I started watching Sons of Anarchy. Even though I love Gemma's character I can't help but associate it with a trashy woman!

What? Addicted to pancakes? Um, okay. This name has been a popular name for a long time in the UK. It isn't a new name.

I'm pretty biased, so thank you for being one of the voices of reason here!  It's an Italian name that's been around for a while.  Jemima is also a pretty common name in the UK if I'm not mistaken.
