Joan = Jo anne?

We had a JOAN today at work that introduced herself as Jo anne.  Um, what?

Re: Joan = Jo anne?

  • Sure.  Just like a boat is a bowatt and a foamie is a foe-amee.  Makes perfect sense.

  • My aunt is Joan and it is pronounced Jo-Ann. She told me it is an old way of spelling it.

  • Weird. If there were another N on the end of that, Joann, that makes sense. But Joan, to me, rhymes with moan.

  • My friend has an aunt who pronounces her name like that.  I find it highly annoying.

  • I don't see it either, but we had an elderly patient once whose name was Joan but she went by Jo-ann.

    It's kind of like how I don't see that Madeline=Madelyn. Completely different.

  • This was done to some of us against our wills. My middle name is also Joan, pronounced Joanne. I was named after my grandma. It's annoying, but I'm not going to legally change the spelling. I don't use my mn enough for it to matter, and since I was named after my grandma, I wouldn't want to change the spelling to make it "right".

  • It gets better, my daughter is named Joanne (JO-ANNE) and she has been mistakenly called JOAN many times!
