Question about low hemoglobin after delivery

I had lo on Tuesday morning naturally. Things progressed very quickly with cervadil induction and there was no time for epi. In fact I had to push so bad the dr barely got his gloves on and she was out. Because of my urges there was some tearing as I wanted to push when I wasnt quite 10. Anyway. The dr that delivered was on his way out from Overnight and I think he had to come in bc they needed someone immediately. He stitched me up but very quickly. I was bleeding quite a bit and nurse kept looking and checking. The next dr apparently had to restitch. Again. No epi so they had to give me a ToN of pain meds after birth I get me throw this. It was very painful. CBC this morning showed low hemoglobin. 6.9 and a 7 is their low for transfusion. It has nothing to do with religion or anything but it freaks me out a little. They retested at noon and I was the same. They have me on iron supplements 2 pills in am and one in evening. Also need to eat iron enriched foods. I know i just delivered and can't remember how fatigued I was with son but for those with hemo issues how long on supplements to help with the fatigue. Share any experiences you may have had with low hemoglobin.

Re: Question about low hemoglobin after delivery

  • It can take a month to 6 weeks to start to feel more normal again with a hemoglobin that low, because it takes your body awhile to make so many new red blood cells. Definitely stick with the iron and the iron-rich food, keep taking your PNV, and get as much rest as it's possible to get with a newborn.

My best friend suffered a massive late hemorrhage, and it was about 6-8 weeks before she felt better, even with 4 transfusions.

  • Ditto pp. I hemorrhaged sfter delivery and needed a d&c, but my hemoglobin didn't drop low enough to get blood. I am finally starting to feel better this week (6). I spent a good portion of the first 3 weeks sleeping because I was too tired to do anything else. My family would just bring the baby to me for feedings. So take care of yourself and definitely take it easy! (I tried to give LO a bath on day 6 and almost passed out, so definitely list to your body if it's telling you something is too much).

  • I had severe hemorrhaging while in post partum care.  The doctors kept waiting to see how much my blood levels would recover on their own, but once I dipped down to 5.6, they decided transfusions were the way to go.

I was definitely a little weirded out by having a stranger's blood pumped into me, but it sure helped me feel better.  Honestly--I felt better within 24 hours because my levels had been so low.  I was at an 8 when I left the hospital and have been on iron supplements since returning home.
