Parenting after 35

NPR - So, is it weird that Santa's here?

When I was a kid, Santa officially arrived in town at the end of the Thanksgiving Day parade. I don?t remember seeing Santa before then. I remember that we didn?t get our Santa pics taken until December.

One of my local malls was decorated for Christmas before Halloween even got here and Santa was in his seat come 11/2, and I found myself so aggravated by this. Um, maybe irrationally annoyed applies here.  And the more I heara about stores opening up Thanksgiving night for shoppers?sigh.

I guess the idea is to put consumers in a spendy mood, but it does the opposite for me. I can't get into the sales. Spite my wallet to respect the turkey & fall season, I guess.

So yeah, I do agree--I think it's weird that Santa's here already. It does seem kind of wrong.

  • Rush, rush, rush...why are we always rushing through life?  I find it really irritating too.  I want to enjoy the upcoming holiday first!  And as soon as the Christmas stuff comes down, they'll be pushing the Valentine's Day candy.

In fact, I don't decorate at home until about 2 weeks before Christmas, which seems really late compared to the rest of the world.

  • There's some hope:  Nordstrom's will NOT be rolling out anything Christmas until the day after thanksgiving!!

    My hats off to them!

(we don't decorate much - my DD's birthday is 12/15 and we go out of town on 12/21 every year - no Christmas until AFTER DD's birthday and since we leave...we don't put much effort into it)

  • That is weird. This morning at the dentist they were playing Christmas music and it seemed so wrong.
  • That early -- yes.  Weird.  Mid November, say weekend before Thanksgiving, I'm happy to get the pic before Thanksgiving and not have to worry about it as I often use it in our Christmas card.  There was actually an article about the "Christmas creep" in retail and the thing is, annoying but it works.  It gets consumers buying for Christmas earlier than they might have otherwise.  We're off to Bass Pro Shops to try and get our pic this weekend!

  • It is definitely early!  We had our first 'picture with Santa" with DD today which was by appointment only, and appointments were available weeks before ours today.  However, as pp said, it is nice to be able to get the photos ready for cards/gifts ahead of time.
