Medela Pump in Style

If you are using or used this breast pump what did you think about it? My friend gave me hers and I have my own parts to go with it from the hospital. I just want to make sure it is a good pump. I am using the hosptial one now but it is expensive to rent. Also, how long did it take for your milk to come in? My babies were born Wednesday and I started pumping Thursday. The first day I got a little bit of the colostrum but since then, nothing. :(    The lactaid consultant is coming to see me again, I am just frustrated. Any tips?

  • Sorry no experience with PIS, I am renting Symphony from BRU. My milk though didn't come in for 5 days! I delivered on monday, and I started getting something on Saturday (I also didn't get any colostrum before then). I think ehat helped me was holding my babies and pumping right after and taking hot showers. No worries, your milk will come soon!

  • I used the Pump In Style for the first 4 months.. it was pretty good, it seemed to work as well as the hospital one. Don't give up yet- I think it took me a week or so of regular pumping (basically pumping every time the kids ate) in order to get anything substantial. But from there it went up and up. For the time I was pumping anyway, I kept using that water container the hospital gave me and just refilled it over and over- drinking lots of water makes a huge difference. I also so just pumped as long as I could, even after nothing else was coming out.

Eventually my doctor also gave me a prescription for Reglan, which helped up my supply a little too.

  • If I could go back and do it again (humm can't believe I said that) I would rent a hospital grade pump for at least the first few months until my supply was established. Everyone's different and for me I struggled with supply issues the whole time and it was very hard but if you think you supply is good when in comes in (approx 2wks) then I think it would be fine to switch to the PIS.  As for tips make sure you are drinking lots of fuids and eating well and pumping every 3 hrs.
  • that is the pump that I use and I like it.  I have used it since they were born.  I think it is as good as the hospital pump.  Good luck with pumping, it took me a good week to get milk and even longer to get enough to feed both of them.
  • I rented the Ameda from the hospital for the first two weeks and I think the PIS is comparable. ?I liked both pumps. ?As far as establishing my milk supply I think it took almost a week before I started to see anything other than colostrum. ?GL!
