After a few breastfeeding troubles my milk is finally coming in. I try to pump when I can and I only get about 1/2 oz out of both my breasts. Anyone else have this issue? I'm wondering if my supply just isn't still well established. DD seems to eat enough with almost a poopy diaper every time I change her and her weight gain is right on track. Will I get more milk if I try pumping more so that I can build a supple in case I need to supplement again? TIA
Re: Pumping so little?
Unless you have an over supply you probably won't pump a lot, especially in the beginning. Your production is based on supply and demand and since your LO doesn't require a lot right now you aren't making a lot. Pump after your LO eats and/or pump on the other side if LO only eats on one side per feeding. This can help make your body think your LO needs more milk. Most likely the more your LO eats the more milk you will start making.
There are pills you can take and foods you can eat that have been shown to sometimes help with milk production. A great website is kellymom.com.
From the sound of your LO's diaper changes she is getting enough to eat. Your body will make more soon enough
Thank you for posting this...can't wait to see all the feedback.
I have been driving myself crazy about this issue...I only pump 1/2oz to 1oz. I have been really sad about this thinking that my milk supply is low but LO is gaining weight and my breasts feel full. The LC tells me to keep pumping but it's so discouraging! I'm hoping I will be able to store milk at some point. Good luck to you!
I forgot to mention that I'm taking Fenugreek. My LC told me this will increase milk supply. I hear there is a lot of herbs/teas you can take to help with milk supply. GL
