I posted this below but thought I would share....
My high risk dr requests the longer lasting spinal (marcaine lasts about 2 hours for sugery) vs the one that is a little shorter (1 hour plenty of time for the procedure but doesn't get you as numb...lidocain...novacaine is what most dentists use). He specifically asks for that bc patients complain of pain/pressure with the lidocaine spinal..who cares if you will be numb longer later (an extra hour or so), better to not feel a thing during (which I never did) just FYI
Talk to your high risk dr and the anesthesiologist to request it if you can.
I will say that my marcaine spinal wore off fast, shocked the drs and nurses. Got my spinal at 7:50, surgery done at 8:50, wiggling feet by 9:30, moving them by 10 and walking by 11! (they thought it would be more like 12 or 1
Re: Tip for mama's getting a cerclage regarding anesthesia
I don't know what I had but I felt some things and could talk at certain points in the surgery but was pretty loopy for most of it. The few times I came to, I just asked for "more loopy" and was back out.
My epidural went in at 12:45 and I came out of the OR at 2:10. I think I got full feeling back around 4:00.
I had my cerclage done in a teaching hospital so maybe that's why it took so long. I definitely recall my Dr. giving instructions and saying things like "that looks good" "now tie the knots and I'll be back to check."
To the poster below who posted about dignity--I hear you! The whole process is so embarassing, especially in front of med students who are about your age!

They knocked me out - I was under a general. I never did ask why, but it is apparently normal for my peri and/or the surgical center I was at. I was out for about 25 minutes, apparently. Apparently, they had me out the door about 45 minutes after the procedure was complete and that was lengthened by having to call and wait on a cab to take me home.
Glad I didn't have to deal with spinal/epi but the throat pain and coughing from intubation were not a great deal of fun, really.

My Blog
Yeah! I always say the hospital knows me by vagina, not face. Pretty bad LOL
I rarely post, but I just got my cerclage 6 days ago and thought this was weird. I went into the OR around 7am, got my spinal shortly after, and was numb until 3pm!!!! They told me 2 or 3 hours!!!
WOW! That is a long time!!
I also will mention...the spinal is a shot, nothing stays in there to continue to add meds like an epidural.
I was not loopy during the first and last but was a little loopy with my 2nd I was very faintish and they gave me meds in my IV to revive me. But overall and especially this last time I was talking and alert like I am normally.
