Parenting after a Loss

Two week growth spurt?!

Anyone?! DS has been super fussy the past day and wants to eat every 3 hrs on the dot (he was eating 2-3 ozs every 3-4 hrs and since yesterday has been taking 3 ozs every 3hrs). He's been crying a lot more and pooping more than usual. He usually gives me one longer (3.5-4 hr) stretch of sleep, but last night was 2.5-3Hr stretches. please tell me it's just a growth spurt and DS will go back to his happier self?!

Eta- sorry to sound like I was whining, I'm more concerned about the huge change in his temperament. Thank you ladies for bringing me back to earth- I will continue to be thankful for ANY sleep I get!

Re: Two week growth spurt?!

  • that's normal for a newborn, hon.

This is what newborns do. My child never slept ever until we sleep trained at a year so count yourself lucky for the sleep you do get.

  • Um.

    Normal.

At two weeks my babies all ate every 2 hours around the clock.   It's what they do.

  • Sorry to report that's actually an enviable schedule no matter how you slice it. DS is 6 weeks on Friday and I thank my lucky stars to get a single stretch of 3 hours in a single 24 hour period.

  • You are lucky is you are feeding every 3 hrs. I have been feeding my LO every 1-2 hrs. My milk supply is low also and probably combination of him going through growth spurts.  Pretty much all I do is feed him.  It was difficult at first, but now I just got used to it.  Thank God for maternity leave!

  • Quinn is 11 days old and last night she was up for most of the night. She's gained 6 oz and 1/2 inch in a week. My pediatrician said yesterday that the next month will be really hard sleep wise but that they are completely unpredictable in the first 6 weeks.

  • What you described, the 3-4 hour stretch thing, is what things were like for me for the first month.  I was really lucky.  Things changed dramatically when he hit his 4-6 wk growth spurt (was waking anywhere from every 1-3 hours some days and then sleeping ridiculous amounts on others...no predictability what the day would bring).  Then, just as the growth spurt seemed to be slowing down reflux crept in and he's now consistently waking himself up due to that, complete with screaming in pain.  Had a 2.5 day stretch this past week where I had a total of 5 hours sleep that was awesome because of that.

Their 'schedules' (and I use that term really loosely, they are too young to have schedules) are really fluid this early on.  Him being off by an hour or so sounds totally normal to me.
