dumb formula questions

ok tomorrow is the first day of having to supplement Sad boooo. anyway, dumb questions: can i use tap water? or should i be using the special baby water from the store?? and are you supposed to use warm/hot water to mix or heat after mixing, or it doesn't matter since it doesn't say?

Re: dumb formula questions

  • I always used "baby" water but you don't have to. I wouldn't use tap water but I don't drink tap myself so I didn't give it to kids. Since we used the gallons of water, I made their bottles using room temperature water and they drank it at that temperature. If your LO is used to warm, I would warm it up though.

  • And yes you can heat the water first if you want.
  • We never used specific baby water.  I used the water out of the fridge since that is what I drink.  A always drank her formula room temp or cold out of the fridge so I'm no help with the heating question.

  • We used the baby water (the distilled, not the purified...although I'm not sure what the difference was). You can heat it if your DS likes milk warm.

  • We skipped the special baby water. DD won't drink it room temp or cold, so we use warm tap water. Or, if we're out and about, I'll mix t cold/room temp, and heat it up after I've mixed it by putting the bottle in a mug of hot water.

  • We used tap water.  And, occasionally we would warm it.  Mostly we would use warm tap.

  • We used to use boiled water but lately it's just tap.  And she takes it at room temp.  We fill a large jug of tap water and leave it on the counter and fill her bottles from there.

  • We used filtered water from our faucet, mostly b/c the water up here is naaaasty.  We would let it run and warm up a little, since DD would not drink cold formula.  If you've been warming the pumped milk for your DS, you may want to try warm water first.

  • For both kids, we've only ever used cold tap water. Add the water, add the powder, swirl gently, and then turn the bottle over and give it a squeeze to make sure the nipple isn't clogged.

We try to avoid vigorous shaking since then the formula ends up more bubbly and then prone to cause more burping and spitting.

I've never heated a formula bottle. I was of the opinion to keep it room temperature unless the baby refused since it makes life so much easier.

Oh--and put in the water first and then add the powder. The powder will add volume to the water. Six ounces of water and three scoops of formula makes a bottle that is then close to 7 ounces once it is mixed.

You may want to get a formula dispenser. They cost about $3 and have 3 compartments for formula. You can carry bottles filled with water and then just add the powder when the bottle is needed. We will often use the dispenser at home because it makes mixing easier and less messy.
