Baby Names

Did you buy a baby names book, and did you find it useful?

DH and I have not found our baby's name yet. We both have different ideas, but nothing has really struck both of our fancies. I've literally poured over every baby name website I can find. Did anyone out there find a baby name book, and in your opinion was it useful? If so, what titles would you suggest? TIA!

Re: Did you buy a baby names book, and did you find it useful?

  • there's nothing you can get in a book that you can't get online. I recommend behindthename.com as "the" go to site. I also search for new names on nameberry.com (their lists are fun).

The only good reason to get is a book is simply if your the kind of person that always imagined yourself flipping through an actual book. The information in them isn't great or superior to the internet in any way.

  • yes but only cause my DH doesn't know how to run a computer so that was the only way we could connect name wise.  i think it was 100,001 Best Baby Names

  • I bought one many, many years ago.  Like 12- and I was 14.  I was obsessed with names and meanings back then.  Now you can find a lot online.  I still have the book (bought a new one because it was falling apart) because sometimes I just like leafing through paper.  Just as how I like to read a real paper book, not just via an ereader.

I like this one:  The Very Best Baby Name Book.  It's meanings I find are pretty consistent with the good websites out there like Behindthename and thinkbabynames.com.

  • I bought a book, but also got ideas from websites. One thing I found that worked to our method of madness: Hi-lighters. Give DH a color, and give yourself a color. Hilight names you like and have DH do the same. Just maybe you will find one you both like this way.
  • No.

We had our short list set and nothing changed.

  • My mom had a baby book for when she was pregnant with me that her and my dad made marks in, and wrote in. I still have it and its cool to look at. Some of the names have changed, and are different. No Madisons, McKennas or Cadens!

  • We had one for our first DS, but it wasn't useful. I think they are just a waste of money. I recommend this board, behindthename.com, and nymbler.com.

  • I have several baby name books.  I used to draw characters/write stories and I liked knowing what names meant so that I could match them up.  That being said, I'm going to go with family names, not really anything I discovered in the books.

  • I liked looking through a book when I got tired of looking at a screen, but the information is basically the same.

  • We bought two copies of the same book.  We were apart (thanks, military) while we were deciding on a name, and it was way easier to discuss page numbers instead of sending links.  We both used the internet a lot, but we went back to the book to discuss with each other.  It's a good way to pass information if you're working together.  You would only need one copy if you're in the same house, obviously.  I thought it was fun to flip through the actual book.  Good luck!

  • Most of what you find in books can be found online.  However, it is kinda fun to just sit around and flip through the pages of a book instead of browsing on web pages.

We got a bunch of name books from the library.  Free, but still useful.  It's fun to look up the meanings and popularity of names we like!

  • Yes, with our 1st child, we used The Baby Name Bible.  I've since given that to a friend but recently bought Beyond Ava and Aiden this time around.  We like to flip through the actual book because we do our name discussions at night, laying in bed, which is a computer-free zone.

  • Ehh. We had a friend loan us a couple of books. I would flip through, but I spent much more time looking online. I wouldnt spend the money if you have regular internet access, as I do not think you will find anything in a name book that you can't online.
