High-Risk Pregnancy

Anyone here w/ CAS or velamentous insertion?

Good afternoon, ladies.

I've never posted on HR before - I'm mostly over on Feb 2012.

Last week, during a routine Level II u/s to check cervical length (cone biopsy 4 years ago - so far, everything looks perfect with my cervix), our perinatologist diagnosed me with chorioamniotic membrane separation (CAS) and velamentous insertion of the the umbilical cord to the placenta.

Good news about the CAS... both membranes are still in tact.  We had a little amniotic band syndrome scare but the fibrous band detected was still tethered at both ends.  Really hoping not to have any further complications with the CAS.

As to the VI, I will be monitored biweekly and then weekly into my 3rd Tri, with some non-stress tests thrown in there for good measure.  The biggest concern is future growth restriction.  She's perfectly on track now, but my OB told me at some point, her growth will become restricted... not really a question of "if" but rather "when" and "to what extent."  So we're looking at an early induction or c-section.

Suffice to say, I'm very nervous... although I guess I've graduated from terrified. Just wondering if anyone else has any experience with these sorts of complications.  TIA.

Re: Anyone here w/ CAS or velamentous insertion?

  • Wow! My OB had a very different take on my VI! He said growth could be restricted but it's not at all a definite.  Also since they discovered my VI at 18 weeks I've been having growth scans with the high risk Dr. every three weeks and it's worked out really well. I'm now 31 weeks and he's right on track with growth. In fact, he's growing so well the Dr. said to come back in four weeks instead of three! So far no talk of early induction or c-section. My OB said VI is actually more common then you think, he said he sees at least one a month, most of the time the mother isn't even aware of it until after the birth. Good luck with everything hope all the best for you and your LO!Big Smile

  • Did your HR OB do a transvaginal doppler scan at all to make sure and rule out vasa previa?  I've read that's recommended with a VCI diagnosis but my doc didn't mention it...

  • Yes. I have had two transvaginal dopplers. Once shortly after the diagnosis and then once at my last appointment when I was about 28 weeks along. Once they rule out Vasa Previa there is a lot less to worry about!

  • Thank you!  My HR OB said "no VP" after the last Level II but I am going to push for the transvaginal as well, just to ease my mind!
