High-Risk Pregnancy

When are you off bedrest?

I was put on bedrest at 30 weeks for pre-term labor and shortened cervix and I'm now 32w4d...my doctor told me that at 35 weeks I will be able to resume activity.  While I'm happy about that, I feel like it sounds early?  I would think that we don't want the baby to come at 35 weeks if avoidable.

 What have you been told?

Re: When are you off bedrest?

  • I was put on bedrest at 30w1d for shortened cervix, then on hospital bedrest at 30w2d for preterm labor symptoms. I am expecting to be released from hospital bedrest at 34w (the day before Thanksgiving, thankfully!), and, while no one has told me anything specific yet, I assume I will be on home bedrest for at least 2 weeks after that. I am still waiting on the specialists here to conference with my doctors at home to decide exactly what needs to be done with me :)

  • I got off bedrest at 37 weeks after 4 months for PTL and risk of shortening cervix after LEEP.  I'm 38 weeks now, 100% effaced, now just waiting. GL!

  • I have been on bedrest since 23w6d for contractions/PTL symptoms. In and out of the hospital three different times now Tongue Tied Now I am at home (thank goodness!!) and my doctor said at 35 weeks I can start to get up and around some. She said I could go out to dinner with DH and be on my feet a little more than I have been for the past 11 weeks to start to regain my muscle strength. Then at 36 weeks I will go off my meds (oral terbutaline) and be completely off bedrest. Although my body will still want me to be taking it easy a lot I am sure! I'm not planning on running any marathons, but making some freezer meals and getting the house cleaned up will be nice!!

  • I went on bed rest at 24w4d for pre-term labor (contractions, funneling, +ffn). I have a shortened cervix due to a LEEP procedure but that hasn't been as much a concern as the contractions.  My MFM has said that at 37 weeks, I can come off bed rest and stop taking the Procardia.  I have a feeling that at 35 weeks, I will probably start "testing the waters" a little more - maybe do a load of laundry or light organization in LO's bedroom...we'll see.

  • I am pretty sure that I will be on bed rest until I deliver.  I have not asked maybe I will ask to see if there is any hope of getting off bed rest.

  • I was put on BR @ 20w for a funneling cervix and had an ER cerc a week and half later when I started to dilate.  I will continue on BR until 36w, when my cerc is removed and we open the gates for the twins to come.

  • I was put on bedrest at 32 weeks for PTL, dialated to 2cm. My OB said I can get off of bedrest and the contraction meds at 37 weeks.

  • I've on and off for 4 weeks. Different doctors have different ideas around length & strictness (is that a word?) of bed rest. I wouldn't be surprised if each reply has a different answer.

  • Everyone is likely to be different. It depends on what your dr is comfortable with. I was on until 36 weeks due to PTL, off two days then back on due to BP issues until I went into labor.
  • I was put on bed rest at 23 weeks and my doc said I can resume normal activity at 35 weeks.  I thought it sounded early too, but I've been doing really well since being put on bed rest and my doc is pretty confident at this point that I will go full term.

  • I know it depends on the situation and the doctor.  My doctors took me off of meds and bedrest at 34 weeks with each of my babes (didn't make it that far with one of them, though!)...ACOG guidelines (the American something or other of Obstetrics and Gynocology) say that it's no longer therapeutic to keep on meds or on strict bedrest after 34 weeks.  With cerclage or other issues, I am sure there is a different recommendation.

My best friend is an OB in Seattle and I am in Minneapolis, although she's not my doc, I always call her and go over the ACOG guidelines when my docs suggest something to see what the standard is- it's basically the bible for OB/GYNS and I always want to make sure I'm getting good info since many docs don't seem to follow the guidelines they set.

hope that helps!  Sounds like your doc is giving you an extra week but sticking close to ACOG!
