mouth ulcers??

Just wondering if anyone has had any mouth ulcers with their pregnancy.  I went to the doctor yesterday thinking that I was in the early stages of some weird throat infection, as I had a huge white looking thing in the back of my throat, not quite on my tonsils.  It hurts like CRAZY when I try to eat or swallow.  The doctor said it's an ulcer.  Right now, I also have some of those annoying little bumps that you get on your tongue that hurt.  I tried looking up if that's common with early pregnancy, but didn't find anything that really talked a whole lot about it.  Just curious if any of you lovely ladies have had the same thing!  It could be completely unrelated, but I'm finding that pregnancy has a LOT of symptoms that I never anticipated - so perhaps this is one of them?!

  • I haven't had that but I'm really sorry -- that sounds terrible!

  • I posted about this a few weeks ago-Yep I'm getting the little bumps on my tongue too..I've had them in the past before pregnancy--not sure if they are little viruses or what..Someone on the board mentioned that our resistance might be down since the baby is taking a lot from our bodies..mine have been coming and going though..nothing major but they are irritated and do burn when I eat certain things..Hope you feel better!
  • I had two, one right after another, the first week after my BFP. None since, though. I hope yours go away soon!

  • I haven't had them with pregnancy (yet!) but I used to get them like crazy right before my period, many years ago.

I would highly recommend you get a toothpaste without Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) in it. SLS can both cause and exacerbate mouth ulcers (canker sores). It's a chemical that creates the foaming action in toothpastes, shampoos and cleaning products. But it doesn't actually "clean" anything. Instead it can cause canker sores to last longer, hurt far worse, and even reoccur more frequently.

I had tried a lot of remedies and nothing worked until I switched toothpaste. Now I rarely get them, and when I do they barely hurt and go away quickly. Rembrandt makes a "Canker Sore" toothpaste that's SLS free. Biotene is also SLS free. Most other toothpastes do have the chemical.

  • I recently visited my dentist and he let me know that with pregnancy, women are prone to infection in their mouths. The mouth becomes sensitive so women have to be careful with eating sharp foods (like chips) and hot food (temperature wise) as this can cause boils or abscess to form inside the mouth. Relief for these occurrences is easy to take care of, usually they go away with mouthwash or a salt rinse but he prescribed me with a mouthwash i should use every 2 weeks or so. If it gets bad enough the dentist will have to pop the abscess to remove the puss. :( eeek, i know. just be careful ladies!
