Formula Question...

Did you wait to buy your formula stash after the twins were born or did you stock up before hand?

I'm not Breast Feeding and wasn't sure what formula is best for those who haven't breast fed as well?

Re: Formula Question...

  • I would not.  We actually went through 4 different types of formulas before we found the ones that worked best for our LOs reflux.  Wait and see what works best for them.  Plus, the hospital and your pediatrician will give you free formula.
U/S#1 showed 2 heartbeats! U/S#2 showed Baby A's heartbeat was 157 and Baby B 's heartbeat was 183! U/S#4 showed Baby A is a Boy (heartbeat 161) and Baby B is a Girl (heartbeat 159)!! Lilypie Second Birthday tickers

This. DD ended up with a milk allergy so we switched formulas a few times before we found one that she liked.

  • I wouldnt, but if you are wanting to stock up to spread out cost, I would buy giftcards to places with lots of different types of formula (like Babies R Us).   Mine were born premature and we had to use Similac NeoSure.  I never would have guessed that!

  • I agree about buying gc's. Ours were on high calorie formula for the first month as well because of being preemies, and we wouldn't have known what we would have been on. We have finally switched because we did the switch slowly.

  • Another thought, my nephew was BF, but when he went to daycare my sister went through like 4-5 different bottle (nipple) types before she found one that he would drink from. So I wouldn't (but this is just me) go over board on the bottles either.

  • Another vote for wait. You will come home with enough to last you at least a few days. You want to see what kind you need. We have been on Neosure for 9 months with both and still another 3 months for one of them. I couldn't have anticipated that.

  • Another vote to wait, or buy GC instead.

My boys went through several kinds as well, and ended up on Allimentum until they were 6-7 months old.

  • No, my plan was to breastfeed.  We got a TON of neosure through our hospital rep when we left the nicu.  I think we had 4 cases delivered, which was amazing.

I agree with waiting until they are here.  Many of us went through a couple different formulas before we found the one that worked.  It would suck if you had a huge stash of formula they couldn't use.

To give you some idea...Mine started on neosure (after 2w in the nicu), then to regular similac, then to Enfamil Gentlease and now that they're older we use up & up (gentlease).  They're just shy of 8 months old.

  • I didn't have any formula handy before babies were born.  1) I tried to BF and hoped it would work out 100%; 2) didn't know what babies would need; 3) didn't know if babies were allergic to anything; 4) hadn't asked doc which she preferred.

Hospital sent us home with about a wk's worth of formula.  By that time, we had seen pedi, and she recommended her favorite, which is what we were giving them from hospital.

  • I was on the fence about BFing and am in the process of weaning now.  They have been on both formula and breastmilk since they were about a week old.  We've had no problem using regular similac.  I bought some of those 2 oz bottles that are ready to feed just before the girls were born so if I needed them we had something in the house.  We used them and having been buying the powdered stuff since then.

I agree if you want to buy gift cards or just start putting money aside so you get used to the cost - I had no idea how expensive it was.

  • Thanks everyone. We'll definitely wait then. :)

  • Skip the gift cards, unless you're getting them for a discount. Stock up on coupons instead! Watch KrazyCouponLady.com for formula coupons, as well as newspaper inserts and the coupons you get at the grocery store register. Grab every brand - you can trade them later here on the Swap Spot board or give them away to other moms. When I see newspaper coupons for our brand, I usually go to the coupon master.com and buy 30 of them. It's only a two month supply for us, but we don't usually have cash on hand to buy more than that at once.
