The Paleo Diet - Neat Story

My cousin's wife recently told me about this diet, which is more of a lifestyle. Has anybody ever heard of this? It's basically eating really healthy (lean meats, no sweets, no processed foods, limited fruit, fresh veggies, etc). I think I am going to try it.

Here's her story: She has a brain tumor on her pituitary gland and years ago, she stopped having a period all together and was basically going through menopause. She was told she would never be able to conceive. She started this paleo diet in January of one year and was pregnant by June.

Yes, maybe it was coincidence, but I really do think that eating healthy is important. Things are so processed these days, we do not know what we are putting into our bodies. I just figured I would see if anybody has heard of it.

Re: The Paleo Diet - Neat Story

  • My husband used to fight MMA and he was very strict with this diet for a very long time! He loved it! But he has since started eating "more balanced" as I call it. It is very hard to stick with this diet if say you'd like to go out to eat, or have a real Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner. Its so strictly based on lean protein, and hardly anything else, that he said it gets very bland after a while because you find yourself eating he same things over and over.

I stick with a more balanced diet than anything. I do not limit myself to certain foods, I allow myself to have whatever I would like to have, however, I strictly limit my portions. I have found this extremely helpful, and I feel so much better because I am not restricting myself to only certain foods.

    Good luck!!

  • It doesn't sound groundbreaking to me. Just a change in how you eat. I don't think anybody eats the way that we're actually supposed to, but it doesn't stop millions of people from getting pregnant every month. All our bodies react differently to things, though. I would give it a shot since it's not unhealthy, but you probably should do it with different expectations.

I wouldn't do it with the expectation to get pregnant. My goal is to get healthy. I want to feel better all around, and when I eat sweets, fatty foods, etc, I feel sluggish and sick. In no way am I saying that it is groundbreaking and that you can get pregnant if you eat this way. I just thought her story was a neat story. Plus, with all of the cancer popping up around me, I think the healthier, the better.

  • I've done it -- still try to stick to it most of the time -- and my husband is even stricter about it.  The first month I followed it to a T and felt more energetic.  I even lost around 4 pounds without even trying.  (I'm a normal weight so weight loss wasn't the purpose, but I'll take it, within reason!)  My husband has lost around 15 pounds on the diet and generally feels more energetic as well.  You'll get most of the benefit if you follow the following guidelines:  little or no dairy, little or no grains, little or no legumes, lots of fruits and veggies, and a good amount of lean protein daily (we've gone out of our way to get grass-fed meats and good wild fish).  Nuts/seeds and eggs are fine, too, in moderation. Avoid added sugar and salt.

I actually made myself get less strict about the diet because I didn't want to lose TOO much weight or change my body chemistry too fast, worried it could have ill effects on TTC.  But I think generally you can't go wrong by eating tons of fruits and veggies and lean protein like salmon, halibut, turkey (but avoid the salty lunchmeat kind!), grass-fed bison, etc.

  • I have heard of this and am starting to move in that direction. I've given up gluten, caffeine, soda and other hfcs processed things and feel tremendously better! It can defn be hard when you're in a hurry or traveling though. It seems similar to the "eat clean" diet.

  • DH followed it loosely last spring and lost about 30 lbs in a month and a half.  I would cook for him and thus ate paleo for dinner most days, and have VERY loosely followed since.  I have lost about 10 lbs total (I am also on Met).
