Trouble TTC

SA results over phone, follow up in January?! XP

When we first met with the RE knowing I have a short LP, the plan was, DH's SA, my testing on CD3, likely clomid/TI or clomid/IUI.

So, we got great news with DH's SA today.  Everything looks good.  The nurse said the next step is sperm banking (?!), let them know when I O, and they'll do an IUI.  Huh?!  That was NOT the plan.  I asked about testing, possible clomid, progesterone... No, they don't do that unless we have additional failed cycles.  Really?!  If part of the prob is my LP, how is an IUI alone gonna do the trick?!  I mean, it might, I guess, but... shouldn't we target whatever is causing the short LP if possible, and see what else could be going on with me?

I asked to meet with the doc to go over the results.. they said the next appt is in January.  What the heck?  I feel like all lines of communication are wonky, and it doesn't leave me with a good feeling.  I'm pretty sure I'm getting a second opinion, and hopefully testing for me.  In fact, I made a tentative appt someplace else already.  What do you ladies think?  Thank you for any input/advice.

  • Yes, that seems strange. I wouldn't do an IUI without more testing and in most cases it's pointless without being medicated. Clomid alone can lengthen and strengthen LP's but it doesn't sound like they're into monitoring? Or maybe I'm missing something. However, it isn't uncommon for there to be long waits for appointments.

  • Honestly, that sounds really sketchy to me can you get a second opinion/talk to a different doc at the practice?

  • That's frustrating that you're not getting the information and explanations you're asking for. I don't blame you going for a second opinion. I agree that it's fairly normal to have to wait for appointments, although January seems extreme since you're already a patient. Different RE's have different approaches - some are really into ART and will push the more intensive procedures whereas others will take a wait and see approach. I recommend Dr. Sami David's "Making Babies" if you haven't read it. He covers the stuff that could be causing the LP issues (among other stuff) and believes in a more integrated approach.

Thank you.  I am already a patient, so it is frustrating.  It worries me too that they don't want to test me at all.  I have ready several books about all this, but not that one!  Thank you for the suggestion.  I'll find it.

  • If your H has good sa results, why are they wanting to bank sperm? And how can they do an IUI if its you who has to let them know you o'd? You mean like when you get a pos OPK? You should be monitored by u/s if you're taking clomid or are you not taking clomid and they want to do an unmedicated IUI?

It is odd that you can't get in til Jan being an established patient but not unheard of I suppose. I think you need at least a phone consult to get some questions answered and if they're unwilling to do that then you should be going elsewhere.

You mean like when you get a pos OPK? (yes... the nurse that called and asked if I ever used OPKs.  Ha.  But this is really their ideal first method... and unmedicated..) You should be monitored by u/s if you're taking clomid or are you not taking clomid and they want to do an unmedicated IUI? (Now, they want it to be unmedicated.  WITHOUT TESTING ME.  Arg!)

I think you need at least a phone consult ( I talked to the nurse on the phone - who was giving me the odd "next steps."  When I asked questions, she said she would talk to the doc and call back tomorrow.  Not to mention, when they said DH's results were good, that's all she said.  I asked for details/#s, and she was flustered and irritated.  What is going on?!  It is a fairly big, highly recommended fertility center in the area... but I don't get good vibes)to get some questions answered and if they're unwilling to do that then you should be going elsewhere.
