Trouble TTC

Only ovulating on one side?

Hello All:

I'm 36. After 6 months of trying and faithfully using digital ovulation tests I go for my yearly check up with my GYN today. Tell her we've been trying. Nothing has happened yet. Going through boxes of digital ovulation tests (the 20 count ones) and seem to only be ovulating every other month even though I get my period every month. So she orders bloodwork to check on hormone levels and a ultrasound of my pelvis and we talk about seeing a reporductive specialist so try to see what is going on- see if their is a possible blockage on one side.

Has anyone heard of a smilar thing?

Re: Only ovulating on one side?

  • The fact that you don't always ovulate doesn't necessarily mean there's an issue with one of your ovaries, just that you may have annovulatory cycles. Your body doesn't always switch which side you ovulate from every month (it's not like ping pong).

When I first started TTC, I felt like I was ovulating from the left side for 6-7 months, then it seemed to switch to the right side for 6-7 months, etc.  In fact, the first month I saw a RE, I told him I felt like I was gearing up to ovulate from the left and the ultrasound said otherwise (had a huge follie on my right).

Also, a blockage wouldn't prevent you from ovulating, it would just prevent the egg from successfully traveling down the fallopian tube. You would need to have a HSG to determine if you have any blockages in your tubes.

If you are referred to a RE, a HSG will probably be one of the first procedures they schedule for you in addition to your blood work and ultrasound and a semen analysis for your husband. GL moving forward!

  • I have a blockage on one side, but still ovulated every month (confirmed through OPK's and temping) so I don't think having a blockage and ovulating every other month are totally related.

    Good luck to you!

  • If you have been actively trying for 6 months and you are over 35, you should def see a RE! I wouldn't waste any time. Look at sart.org to look at stats in your area to find a good RE. It breaks it down into age and dx as well.

  • I have a blocked fallopian tube and both GYN and RE have told me that you can still ovulate and the good tube can pick up the egg from the opposite side. So, not saying that is not what is happening, but its not necessarily the case. It just seems like you're having annovulatory cycles. As PP have mentioned, an HSG will be among the first tests an RE will do; which will tell you if anything is blocked. Good luck with your testing
  • UPDATE:

Bloodwork came back normal. Ultrasound showing bicornuate uterus which basically means my uterous has two sides with a wall in between, kind of shaped like a heart.  Of course I did google search because I'd never heard of this before- not liking what I read. Have appt with RE with husband on 11/23 will see what they say.
