How important are initials?

Ok, for our boy name we've picked: Brady James "S"

Initials, BJS.....Seriously on a scale from 1-10 how bad is it?  Would you look for a different middle name? We've put a call into his more to gather up more family names for us....WWYD?

  • I dont think it's that bad. My niece's initials are bjh. Its a personal choice on your part if you want to change it.

  • Nah - I wouldn't worry too much.  Its not like the initials will be ASS.

  • I agree, I just don't want him to be picked on from the start :(  BTW I'm 17w0d, we're only one day apart! We have our gender reveal on Wednesday, can't wait!!! And as my DH keeps reminding me, it could be a girl! :)

  • I dont find out gender for like 3 more weeks...kinda makes me sad..i just wanna find out already. My husband, mom , and sister are all convinced its a girl..they all had dreams. And for some reason my sister says only the dreams about me come true so we will see. I want a boy, either way im happy..just havent had a gut feeling yet either way!

  • I don't think it's bad. I just wouldn't go embroidering it on a backpack in school.

I knew a girl who's initials were BAD but she thought it was bad ass and was proud of it (even at 6 years old)

  • A lot of kids don't know each other's middle names so it tends to be more of issue actually when the last name ends in a "J."  I don't think its a problem and I like the name  :)

  • The only reason I'm finding out early is b/c they want to check out my cervix, so I got lucky.  Found out at 15w with DS! I don't have a gut feeling either way.  I have had dreams about baby girls, but we'll see!

  • I personally wouldnt do it.. our last initial is S and I have been very vocal tht we need to pay attention to initials.. Kids are cruel and even though they dont have to say their middle name.. what if another kid sees something of theirs like a report card with their name on it... I just wouldnt want to give them any additional ammo...

  • If we have a daughter her middle name will be Allison and our last name is T so we automatically eliminated all names beginning with F and R. I don't think BJS is so bad.

i wish i could be joking but my dad is the music teacher at a church so he owuld be mad. we had sex, all the time how bad i know but we dont want to wait and he said GREAT OH KAY! and I was really feeling the wets? down there- too embarsed to say- but he acted like man.
  • Our son is going to be Brenden Scott C ... so BSC.  I agonized over it but decided I didn't care ... but for us it's middle initial that was the concern not last.

  • I think most people use their first and last initials, more than all 3 (I could be wrong here).  Which would be BS for your child, not horrible. If you like the names, then use them.

  • Initials and monograms are very important to consider. However, I happen to know lots of BJ's and I don't automatically associate the initials with the slang term right away. On the other hand, my cousin's initials are sdt, she refuses to have anything monogrammed b/c it spells out std. . . my sis's initials were sac - she too was not eager to have her initials put on anything.
  • I was ARM and now I'm ARC. No one even noticed unless I pointed it out and then they laughed for a second and forgot about it. Not a big deal.

  • I was an EAZ.  Fine if people used middle names for everything, but they don't.  Let me tell you, going through high school as EZ was unpleasant to say the least.  I don't have anything monogrammed from pre-name changing, because that would have been EZA, which would have been bad.

I remember asking my parents what they were thinking and my dad said he thought it might be an issue but they liked my name, so....  It was not the answer I was hoping for.

  • I don't think it matters, and not many children will know your childs middle name, so the middle initials should be a problem. My initials are JB, which backwards are BJ, and my best friend for the past 15 years, her initals are ET. We have both, never had any problems.
My little pumpkin was born at 34weeks, weighing 3lbs, due to severe IUGR & Unexplained Placental Insufficiency. He spent 49 days in the NICU. Lilypie Premature Baby tickers imageimageimageimageimageimage
  • I knew a kid in school who went by BJ - first name Brian and MN something starting with a J.  He was a cool kid.  BJS wouldn't bother me that much.  I'm sure he won't have much monogramed until his married and then there will be a new initial in the mix.  As long as his initials are A$$, I think you're ok.

Before I got married, I used to use BM for my initials but then someone pointed out Bowel Movement- so I switched to BLM and now it is BLL.  We did think about the initials for our LO.  We stayed away from vowels for the middle name for out LO.  We didn't want him to be made fun of GAL as a middle name.  Although, if the LO had been a girl the initials were going to be MOL.  But that went well, cause my husband got the nickname Possum when we was in the Marines.

  • I think it's stupid to think about initials.  You never even write out all three on important documents.  All you need are first and last initials...and ask yourself this...how many friend's full initials do you know?  I don't know anyone's middle name and even if I did and they spelled out some silly 3 letter term, I wouldn't get hung up on it.  I have far more important things in my life to think about then people's initials.
  • Really not that bad.  My initals growing up were MAS but I have always gone by my middle name Allison.  I married a S everyone always thinks my initials are A.S.S. but I just laugh about it.

Keep in mind too that if you are monograming it on stuff - typically you use first initial, last initial, middle initial so on clothing it would be BSJ.

  • I wanted to name our child Peyton. Our last name starts with a P so DH was objected. He said he did not want his childs initials to be PP. I cracked up. So we will use it as a middle name if its a girl.

    My SIL's initials are ASS.

She is not monogramming anything for the rest of her life!

  • My little girl is going to have the initials "LEG" :) People have pointed this out to me like I didn't notice. I just think it is better than other initials she could have... "LUG" "LAG"
  • I really didn't think much of this at all... but now I'm second guessing our boy first name and last name... which would be HO...  hmmmmmmmmmm......

  • How do you feel if he goes by the nick name BJ? That could be a possibility. Personally I think it is fine but there is a chance that it will be a source of either contention or pride as the case may be.

  • I have a little cousin whos initials are ASS and its kinda funny to me, and the rest of the family we all get a chuckle out of it. But as far as out of the family she hasn't had any problems, The fact that your LO's initials will be what they are really dont matter. How often were you called by your whole name in school? I am just saying...

And I also keep on wondering, what if she marries a guy with the last name G? GAG? that one is bad. :/
  • DD's initials are PKU...so PU or if monogrammed PUK.  We decided we didn't care. We loved the name Finley, but decided FU was a bit too much!
