WDYT??

I have an account at work that is requesting a visit from my boss and they have invited me to come along. It is on 12/14, I know it is 2 weeks before my due date, but I am not sure I want to risk being almost 2 hours away from my hospital that close to my due date. It is in a city 1.5 hours away and work is already 30 minutes from my hospital.  Should I decline?

Re: WDYT??

  • I know, for me and DH, we are not going very far from home after Thanksgiving (2 weeks before my due date).  If it were me, I would decline the visit.

  • I wouldn't worry about it.  Every Tuesday I work at a site 45 minutes east of my house, and my hospital is around 40-45 minutes southwest of my home, so it's about 1.5ish hours total to the hospital (plus stopping at home to grab bag).

I plan to keep working there until I go into labor, and if it happens at work than I will leave asap and make my way to the hospital.

  • Talk to your doctor and see if he/she feels comfortable with it if not request it in writing that way you have a medical opinion to back you up (just in case).  If they don't feel comfortable with it or advise against it don't go.
  • When do you have to decide by? I'd be inclined to say no (if it wasn't mandatory/didn't hurt your career) but if you are having no signs that anything is happening then I'd probably go.
  • I was actually invited to a annual potluck for my team 2 hours away from my current office, the same week as my due date. I declined and told my boss I didnt feel comfortable being that far away that close to my due date, should something happen. I would say go with your gut feeling. If you dont want to then decline for sure!

Probably by today... I think I will wait to see if my boss says anything to me today about going, and if not, I will probably decline. I am a worry wart...

Thank you for all your input girls!!!

  • I would hope they would be more than understanding if you choose to decline.

Otherwise I'd listen to your body/doctor. If there are signs you might go into labor early then decline. Otherwise these little ones might be really stubborn and you might go overdue...it's all a guessing game. Labor typically doesn't progress super fast so 2 hours doesn't seem like a huge deal. Some doctors have "guidelines" though on what is and isn't acceptable.

  • I'd talk it over with the boss and say that if you'd prefer to ride together so that if something happens you've got a driver, but I'd say go!!  Unless you've got a reason that day that it doesn't "feel" right, then I'd go...  DD was overdue and it bugged the heck out of me to be twiddling my thumbs at home when I could have been working and making money during that time...  Like others said, it's a guessing game.  For now I'd tell them "I'd love to be there, however please be aware that I am in the final weeks of my pregnancy, if something changes with LO and I'm not there don't be alarmed"...

  • My main concern would be the driving situation - 2 hours should be plenty of time (even if it's really uncomfortable) to get back, but you shouldn't drive yourself and your boss or someone else would have to be ok with leaving to drive you

That said, DH and I opted to have my parents over for Thanksgiving rather than drive to their house that is 2 hours away (Thanksgiving is 12 days before my due date).  Partly because there's no sense in being that far when we can just as easily have them at our house and mostly because I know I would not physically be comfortable in the car for that long.
