My parents are asking me for suggestions of something that they can do with C every time they come to visit, which will be "their special tradition". They come out here a few times a year, so it doesn't need to be a holiday tradition. I don't really know as to what place/restaurant/activity they can make a tradition out of, that both they and C will enjoy as he gets older. The Zoo? One of the Museums? A restaurant?
Re: Need suggestions for OOT Grandparents
at this age, it's really hard to start a real tradition. How about just playing together and reading books together. Maybe have a special book about grandparents visiting or something like that.
my parents are local, but here are some things that they really enjoy doing with DS:
- gardening (your folks could make a tradition of planting a tree annually with C, then tending to it each time they visit that year)
- storytime (they have special books that they read. usually long, chapter books -the last was the original winnie the pooh- and they will read one chapter at a time. DS looks forward to finding out what happens next when he seems them again)
- my dad is really into planes and flying, so each year he takes DS to the air show at Andrews AFB
- they take long walks and bike rides (they bought and keep a bike and bike gear at their house, even though they live five minutes away from us!).
- for the past couple years, DS has really enjoyed helping in the kitchen. so near the holidays, they bake cookies. they make other edible treats at other times during the year, too.
- one of my favorite things to do when we visit is look at old family photo albums and tell DS and DD (though she's too young to listen for more than 1 minute...or care) about the family members
