The cause of my contractions...

So I spent a night in L&D, and a week on bed rest due to having contractions (2 to 5 minutes apart), started cramping on weekend, came in on Monday to discover this... so it was like 3 days straight! Anyways, after a night of pumping magnesium into me, my muscles relaxed and they went away.

Latest appointment showed that my cervix was the right length and they don't really seem worried anymore.

Anyways, having early contractions seems to be a common problem, even when their cause is a mystery, around here... and here's what I've sort of found...

I think bed rest works because (I'm not on bed rest anymore, but taking it easy):

-I think my uterus just gets strained when the baby is growing, especially as he's always sitting real low. So, during certain times during baby growth (or position), when I do a lot of physical activity or am on my feet a lot, I'll get some soreness/crampiness that I'm thinking eventually leads to contractions. Because I've had similar discomfort over past few days and sure enough got a pretty big contraction this morning from moving from my side to laying up position. If I don't immediately remedy it by getting my pelvis/stomach area supported and comfortable again (knees above pelvis is ideal apparently), I suspect I'd have a repeat of what happened a few weeks ago.

In case it helps anyone make sense of their contractions !

Re: The cause of my contractions...

  • UGH!  Isn't magnesium the WORST?!  I'm glad your contractions didn't do anything and you were able to find some remedies.  I know they always say to lay on your left side (there's some vein or artery or something on the right side), drink fluids, empty your bladder....if it keeps going, come on in and get checked.  Glad that in your case, there was no dilation!
