Cloth Diapering

Shared washer and dryer

So I'm finally about to prep my stash, which I've been putting off for weeks.  Unfortunately, the washer and dryer I use is shared by several others.  Any quick, easy tips for stripping washers and dryers?  I've told everyone that they can use my detergent and my wool dryer balls for their things too, which everyone seemed on board about, but I'm not sure how reliable they are going to be about it.  Anyone in the same situation or have suggestions?  We are hoping to move in the spring and will hopefully have our own washer and dryer, but until then I really want to make this work.

Re: Shared washer and dryer

  • For the washer, just run an empty load with hot water and bleach.

No idea on the dryer. If you're worried, you can always get a rack and hang things to dry. I would doubt that it's likely to be a problem.

Didn't even think about a rack :) Thanks, that just might be my problem solver, if there is one to solve.

  • Oh my... you have to strip your washer and dryer? I only use the CD detergent on my CDs and regular for other things, nobody told me that! :o/  I'm using Arm and Hammer sensitive (but it's scented) for my other clothes that get done in that washer, but Charlies for the CDs. Am I supposed to not use regular detergent in the washer? Argh
  • Our tenant uses "regular" detergent on his stuff and I've not noticed any issues.

Some people just err on the side of caution.

My HE washer does have a "clean" function, though, and for that I run it with just bleach every few months.

No one uses dryer sheets here, so I really don't know if that's a real issue or not.

I'm just assuming that it would be an issue because of non-cloth diaper friendly detergent and dryer sheet build up.  My LO isn't even here yet, so I have yet to cloth diaper, so don't let my over zealousness get you down if what your doing is working. :)
