Teachers: What do you do for daycare?

Hi all,

I don't post all that often, but I was wondering if there any teachers out there.  What do you do for daycare?  I'm thinking will all the time off that we get, it might be best to go the babysitter route.  I will only need someone for 3 days/week as family members will be helping out for the other 2 days.  Is a daycare cheaper/worth it?  I live on the South Shore, any recs would be most helpful!

Thanks!

  • This has been on my mind so much lately.  My husband and I are TTC and I'm a teacher, too.  I don't know what we'll do when we actually get pregnant and have a baby.  Does anyone job share at the middle school level?  Are people thinking daycare or in-house care?  How much flexibility do you have with your district to work part-time?

  • This is on my mind, too!!! I'm a teacher, too! I'm doing a practicum to finish my MEd, I'll be done in Dec, and I'm due April 1st. I've always said I want to be a stay at home mom, but since I'm just finishing my MEd, I want to use it, and really enjoy being a teacher! I know my feelings may easily change once baby is here though. My husband fears that a family childcare will be more expensive than it's worth. (We don't want our infant in daycare, just personal opinion). Nannys are more expensive than a family type sitter (I'm thinking a grandma type lady who babysits one or two others). Ugg too much to think about.

  • I am a teacher too. I found a woman who wanted to watch a baby(more like a sitter). She lives close by and I only have to pay her the days LO goes to her. Otherwise, many daycares charge on our vacations, or some of them anyways and they also want you to bring your LO at least pt in the summer. My neighbors are teachers and have 2 kids and they use a nanny. It has worked out great for them but I am not sure how much they pay, I think it is a little expensive. I think you have to go with what you can afford and what makes you most comfortable.

As far as part time/job shares. I know that varies district to district and in some cases if you job share I have heard the workload can be just as similar to if you were working full time(you are always playing catch-up). Good Luck!

  • I am a teacher. I have a 2 and a half year old and a five month old. I would actually LOVE to quit my job and stay at home, but our mortgage won't let that happen (and I love my home, so moving is not an option!) My mom watches my LOs when I am at work. I have friends who are teachers and one of them has a nanny type person come to her home three days a week and family watches her baby the other days. I think she said she pays hourly but I can't remember how much. I also have friends at work who use a day care as well. It is always a tough decision. Good luck!

  • I'm not a teacher, but my children go to a home daycare that takes only teacher's children (except for mine... long story, but I know her personally).  So she takes all teacher holidays, vacations, snow days, etc. off and you don't pay for the week long vacations or summer... because the kids are home with you.  Sucks for me sometimes cause I have to scramble to get my MIL here on snow days, but otherwise it's been great.  Maybe there are people that run home daycares near you with similar schedules... talk to other teachers you work with.

  • There are at home daycares who will accommodate your schedule and only charge you for the days that you need.  I am opening a daycare in East Walpole and I am willing to work with a teacher's schedule.  If interested please email me at justlikehomedaycare@aol.com.
