Natural Birth

caught off guard

i am due in june and planning a home birth.

thursday i went to get blood work done and when they lab tech was filling out a form she asked me "and you're deliverying at (local hospital) right?" I said yes as i was caught off guard and my neighbour is the woman who drew my blood and was standing there.

if heaven forbid something happens then yes that would be the hospital..but i was caught off guard and didnt expect to be asked that.

did you get asked this when you were having your blood taken? how did you respond.

there are just soooooooooooooo many misconceptions about homebirth that i dont want people to think im being irresponsible and i really dont want to have to justify my choice.

Re: caught off guard

  • I've never been asked that, just asked to confirm who my provider is.

I like to tell people I'm not birthing in a hospital (I'm going to a free standing birth center).  I'm very happy with my decision and want everyone to know that there are other options.

  • you can think of it as an opportunity to educate ppl about alternative birthing options.  that task can get daunting though.  you also don't have to justify anything to anyone.

  • I believe that I was asked during a lab draw so that my blood type could be on record with the blood bank just in case.    I also need Rhogam from my hospital's blood bank.
