Crochet blankets

I received two hand made crochet blankets so far. How have you washed these? By hand? Super delicate cycle? Special detergent? And air dry?

Re: Crochet blankets

  • We have quite a few from DD that were made for us and I love them!

I use an extra large size delicates bag and then put it on a gentle cycle. I have an old top loader (so it's harder on the clothes than a front-loader) and I haven't had any problems with this routine :)

ETA: To dry, I lay them out on a flat surface, otherwise they'll stretch and can get ruined (I put a towel underneath, but they don't usually come out soaking wet anyway).

  • I always try to wash them in the delicate cycle and dry on lowest setting using regular detergent and fabric softner. I also just checked my care instructions on my yarn too, to double check. It should be fine no matter what kind of yarn is used.

  • It depends what they're made out of. Did the gifter tell you that they were machine washable? In general with machine washable knit/crochet items, I wash them on the gentle cycle with delicate detergent (same that I use for bras)  and then lay flat to dry. You want to avoid high heat, as this will "kill" the  acrylic and make the blankets look sad.

  • hmmm... I have always washed normally but used the low heat setting on the dryer.  I haven't had a problem in the last 17 months and they still look beautiful.

  • My whole family crochets and we always tell people to wash on delicate with wool-light. Air drying is the most important thing though as a PP mentioned.

  • I only have one that is made out of a super soft and fancy yarn that can't go in the regular wash and dry cycle.  It will be going in handwash and air drying.  The rest, including ones I've had since ds's birth, I've just washed and dried with the rest of his bedding.  All the ones he has are made out of cotton or wool yarn so the dryer hasn't done anything to them.
