Switching to HE FL when traveling

I have really hard water and an old top loader.  We're going on a 3 week trip to visit our families and they all have HE FL's with super soft water so I'm really worried about this washing stuff.  What are your routines for HE FL's?  Also, we use Tide Ultra (not HE), should we get some samples of different detergent to use?

You will have to use a HE detergent in an HE washer. Samples tend to be more expensive to wash, so if I was you I'd just buy a package of something and use it up when you get home. For soft water, use the lowest amount recommended. It will tend to suds more.

In my HE FL, I do a "rinse and spin" with either low or no spin, then a hot wash (whites or stain) with an extra rinse.
