Anyone Else Think Old Navy's Quality is on the Decline?

Not that their clothing was ever high-quality but I always found it to be fine.  Lately it seems like everything I buy from there has issues after 2 or 3 washings.  Tiny holes in the material, the material thins out... ruffles came off of DD's shirt - Have only washed it once.  I think I'm going to quit shopping there.

Re: Anyone Else Think Old Navy's Quality is on the Decline?

  • Yes. I bought some clothes from there recently since I am still not quite down to my pre-pregnancy size and didn't want to spend a lot. Half of the shirts (t-shirt type) have little holes and the jeans I bought faded dramatically. It was a waste of money.

  • Yeah, I only buy flip flops there now. They had relatively good quality in the late 90s/early 2000s, but they pretty much suck now. Their shirts are either huge or super small (same with pants) and almost all are tissue thin. What happened to shirts you couldn't see through?

  • Yeah, I really don't find anything that I think has a good fit or quality anymore. I thought maybe it was just that my body is harder to dress post-baby, but I think the quality has also declined.

  • I think that their clothes have always been crap, never understood the craze.. at all. Grandted we live in a small town and it's the only store within 45 minutes but all my friends have always been big ON fans, never understood.
  • Honestly this is why I don't shop there I have always had that problem with them and I am not a fan of disposable clothes, guess you get what you pay for
  • I agree.  I stopped buying clothes there two years ago.

I do think the kids stuff holds up just fine, though.

  • I only buy certain things there and avoid it unless there is a huge sale.  But, that is how I have always found their clothes to be.

  • I haven't bought clothes from there in years because I felt the quality of their clothes was horrible.
  • Yep, Banana and Gap too. Which shouldn't be a surprise since they're all owned by the same company. DH loves Banana and I keep complaining that each time I buy something, there's a hole in it after 1-2 washes. Then we end up there on date-night while waiting for a table at the restaurant next door and I buy something just to try again, and surprise surprise, hole after 1 wash and I get so annoyed!

I'm done w/ them. Which is too bad. But it's ridiculous when you wash or wear something once or twice and then it's littered with holes.

I will get a pair of flip flops there and that is about it.

  • As far as their kid's stuff, it used to be a lot better. My nephew is 8, and the ON hand-me-downs we used to get from when he was a baby and toddler were so much better quality than what's there now. It's tough to beat the price on their jeans, but they are so cheap-looking and they don't fit very well. I stick Gap and Boden these days, at least I can hand everything down to Clay that way.
  • I have never thought their stuff to be great quality, but I do think it has gotten worse. I will pick up some cheap stuff for DS sometimes, but that is about it.

  • I hardly ever shop at ON since there aren't any around here.  I was really disappointed in some maternity tops I bought there.  They stretched out weird after the first washing.  I had pretty good luck with their maternity jeans.  I really liked their maternity hoodies.  They were pretty thin compared to regular hoodies, but I was always hot during my pregnancy and missed wearing hoodies.

I've been having trouble with quality at a lot of places.  I keep having clothes rip at the seams while washing.

Most likely 90+% of the clothes we all wear are made in China and other places. The quality control just isn't there with these outsourced factories. Doesnt mean all foreign made items are crap of course, but really, you get what you pay for. If we are paying $10 for a tshirt at Old Navy it probably cost them a dollar to make in China. Can't imagine why their stuff sucks. When we move away from the disposable culture we have where we want huge quantities of everything but we want it dirt cheap, the tide will change and American companies will respond accordingly or go out of business. But first buying habits have to change.

  • Their clothes have always sucked. I don't shop there. A friend of mine got me about 4 maternity shirts from them when I was pregnant. I wore 2 of them maybe 3 times, and the material thinned out, the darker shirt or lighter, a hole in the lighter shirt. Ugh. That place is crap.

Their jeans have always been total crap.

They have a long sleeve crew next t this year that has become my uniform on SAH days.  But other than that, no dice.

I do get lots of stuff there for DS though.  He is growing like a weed, so I am fine with a $3 thermal he will wear twice.

Are you talking about those $5 shirts, I bought them in every color, they are so perfect...

There kid stuff seems to wash okay...not a big fan of their pants.

This. I shop used clothes that are a lot higher quality.

  • I'm not a fan of their adult clothes, though some of their children's clothing works fine for us.  I do have to say that it's never been my favorite place, but I still find myself in there once in a while if I need something specific for the girls and don't want to spend a ton.  I bought them black pea coats for the holidays for ~ $50 total, they're adorable, and they will only wear them a few times.

  • I shop at Old Navy maybe twice a year yet have found that the clothing quality at many places have gone down.  Places that use to sell affordable quality clothing are now selling items that have tiny holes, ripped seams, etc. after only a few washings  It's irritating.  I have some items from those same stores that have lasted years with good care....it's not the same now.  At all.

  • The only thing I have really enjoyed from ON is some great maternity clothes. They work well, but I only needed them to last for 6 months. Our ON is right next to Kohls, Ross & Target - if I'm in that area, I don't pick ON first.

  • I used to work at Gap and if you held Banana Republic, Gap and Old Navy stuff up you could tell the obvious difference in quality in that order with a very steep drop off between Gap and Old Navy.  I'm not sure if the quality has gone down from that time since their clothes rarely ever fit me.  I have to buy large shirts because of bust size but then the whole shirt just looks like a baggy sack (I think they are very square or something), none of the jeans fit at all.  I do have a few work out items and pj pants from there but that's about it.

I have no issues at all with their baby clothes, but then again baby clothes are grown out of quickly so maybe there just isn't enough time.

I feel like ON is really made for the junior highish body- before the boobs and bigger and the hips get wider. It just doesn't seem like it's made for adults... kind of like aeropostale?

  • I've never really liked their clothes because they don't fit my body well and have always been cheaply made IMO. Sometimes I'll buy kid stuff there but that is about it.

I think you are on to something.  Every time I see that bowling commercial with all the women wearing the jeans I laugh to myself thinking that they must have custom tailored them because ON jeans never fit like that.  For the average woman though, if you are on the hunt for cheap jeans why on earth would you go to the trouble and expense to tailor them?

  • I've never been a big fan of their stuff, but I do like their new fit line.  I need new workout pants and I'm going to run there in a few days to get some.  They are good for the price, considering Target's "compression" pants are the same price and are total crap

  • I've never really liked ON and haven't shopped there in years. I got a friend's maternity clothes, and she'd gotten a few items from there, and they held up very well (considering she wore them 2 pregnancies, and most of the items looked fairly new or very lightly used when I got them). So I walked by one the other day and decided to stop in for a few things. Well, the yoga pants I got formed those little balls on them before I even washed them! Never again.
