Trouble TTC

prometrium question

Hi all,

I'm sorry if this is a silly question, but I'm a little confused. This week my ob/gyn diagnosed me with a luteal phase defect following 7dpo bloodwork, and prescribed prometrium for me to take nightly from 3dpo through the start of my period.

But I see some other folks are prescribed prometrium to bring on AF - why would the same thing be prescribed for that and for LPD, when my whole problem is that AF was coming too soon?

Thanks so much for your help - this is my first step toward treating a diagnosis and I feel a little thrown!

Re: prometrium question

  • It's the drop in progesterone which brings on AF. So if you have a short LP, you can take extra progesterone to make it last longer. If you don't get AF on your own, it is usually because you don't ovulate regularly and thus have low progesterone. You can take progesterone for 10-12 days (to mimic a normal LP) and then when you stop it, you get AF.

     Does that make sense?
