Adoption

question

Hi ladies - is there anyone on this board that is looking into or has any experiences with embryo adoption or is it just mainly info on domestic/international adoption? I am trying to find some bumpies I can ask questions to regarding embryo adoption & am not sure if this is where I go!?

Thanks so much in advance...

Re: question

  • Every once in a while someone posts about it, but I don't know if anyone has direct experience with the entire process.

If you want, my adoption agency is also partnering to do embryo adoptions, and I know they have a webinar coming up. I can PM you the info and you can check it out if you want.

  • I spent a good amount of time last week chasing some of the facts (we're looking into adopting embryo(s) for a gestational carrier of ours) and didn't find much on the Bump. (however, I didn't check the babycenter boards, or the other IVF ones yet, I bet there's groups somewhere).

For us, if we wanted to stay with our RE, we'd have to use THEIR clients embryos that THEY made and froze. (at one specific cryo place). The wait was "about 2-3 years" but I"m going to place bets that not many people are donating, b/c this is a high end respectable BUSY clinic. I think they're not b/c they know their embryos are likely going to a local couple. While I LOVE the idea of E.A., I can imagine the thought of running into your "kid" at the grocery store could be a concern for some.

Costs? About $3K for the FET, and both the RE and the cryo place wanted from $2-4K each for "admin fees"  (roll eyes). I was able to find a few places online that are more like an "agency" of sorts, with listings of the embryos avail, what the bio parents look like, do for a living, etc. and their expected compensation. (often cryo fees+) It looked like you could find a place with a short wait (6 mos?) but of course, like anything, it's gonna cost ya. ;-)   Some were PDG'd, some you had to apply to learn info (as far as what day were they frozen, how many per straw, etc).

I think it's an idea that will catch on a little bit, and become more available in the coming years. I'm especially drawn to the idea b/c I know what goes into making those little bitties, and would be honored to give them a chance at life. (we are personally not concerned with the genetic connection at this point, I'm old and tired of doing ART)

I think we're going to get our name on the list, but there's so many unknowns right now with both our own messed up situation, etc. but I thought I'd share what I found out.

    GL!
