Hi ladies,
I was wondering if anyone could tell me their experience with OB care/delivery with Annapolis Obgyn associates?
I love my primary OB (Dr Argeles) but I haven't even seen him since my first appointment, and I've been disappointed with a few of the others that I've seen--its very impersonal and I feel like they are just trying to get the patients in and out. I'm hoping it gets better. Any advice would be appreciated
Thanks!
Re: Experience with Annapolis OBGYN?
I had DD w/ Annapolis OB-GYN. Dr. Guckes delivered her and he was very patient with me through a long labor and delivery. I feel that I got very lucky and that there were other OBs in the practice who would have rolled me in for a c-section at the 12 hour, 18 and 20 hour marks.
Throughout my pregnancy I contested the EDD they gave me- they said 1/31 and my calculations based on my LMP was 2/11. I was really concerned about it from the beginning because I did not want to be induced, because something like 65% of inductions in first time moms result in c/s and I did not want a c/s. At almost EVERY appointment I had, I brought this up. I mentioned to EVERY OB I met with that I did not want a C/S. When I reached 38-39 wks they said, OK we have to start to talk about induction- I mean REALLY? Of course I said, well I have been saying since the beginning that my EDD is really 2/11. The doc I met w/ then said, well at your next appt we will do a non-stress test and schedule something.
The surgical coordinator called me the day before my next appt and made me schedule an induction for 2/11 (only other dates offered were 2/7 and 2/8.) Thankfully Dr. Guckes was the doc on call; I had had 3 or 4 appts w/ him and he knew how much I didn't want a c/s, but I still feel like I would have gone into labor on my own w/i 48 hours and would have had a better delivery w/o starting it off w/ pitocin. DD was born after 2.5 hrs of pushing and they had to use vacuum assistance to get her out- a NICU team was in the room because of that + that there was merconium in the water when they broke my water, and I didn't get to hold her for an hour after she was born.
I left Annapolis OB-GYN after having DD because I was really just a number there. Even my 6 week PP appt was so sh!tty. I saw a GYN I had never seen before & she scoffed at me when I said I wanted to BF dd until she was 10+ months and told me I should really be on birth control. Idiot. I took DD w/ me in the baby bucket and no one in the entire office even congratulated me or commented on DD.
ETA- for DS I switched to Bay Area Midwifery. They are also in the Wayson pavilion and you can have a hospital delivery w/ an epidural with them, but you also have the option to birth in their birth center (but then no epi, also no IVs, no constant monitoring, you can get in a tub, eat, etc.) At the time I had DS they had 4 midwives (but the 4th was on maternity leave, so there were only 3 that could have caught DS, and 2 of them were there for his birth,) they might have 4 or 5 now.
I had an awesome birth with DS, no IV, total freedom of movement, no coached pushing, I was on my hands and knees and had no tearing or anything. I got to hold him immediately and we were able to do the delayed cord cutting, they did all of the newborn exam stuff on a queen size bed right next to me, so I didn't have to be away from him, etc. They were also so great with DD throughout my pregnancy (she came to almost all of my appointments with me and they were totally cool with that.)
This is a second recommendation for Bay Area (even though that is not really what you are asking.) Because of slow growth, I was induced and ended up having DD in the hospital with Bay Area. They work with Dr.Sweeney and the Center for Maternal Fetal Medicine on Bestgate.
Eventhough I was induced, and had to be continuously monitored, I still had a great birth experience. I was able to try the pitocin drip twice. They finally had to break my water, but I was able to push when I wanted and move around in any position that I wanted to. I didn't want the NICU Dr.'s in there when I delivered and my midwife respected my wishes.
I didn't have an epidural, so I can't comment on how they do that.
I've had friends who used Annapolis OBGYN but I used Chesapeake Women's Care for DS and overall wasn't pleased. Majority of the doctors acted like I was wasting their time. There were only 2 doctors there I actually liked and trusted and luckily one of them delivered DS.
For #2 I switched to Bay Area. My first appt was great, my 2nd is on Thursday, so I'll get a better feel for them then.
Nursed without dairy, egg, soy, peanut, treenut, fish, shellfish or beef for over a year.
Currently tandem nursing dairy, egg, and shellfish free.
DS born via emergency c/s after 20 hrs of labor. DD successful VBAC!

I used them with no problems. Just because of the way scheduling worked out, I saw Argeles, Haddock, Repka, Guckes, Greely, and Cabrera during my pregnancy. They were all very nice and Dr. Haddock delivered my son (although he is retired now). Argeles is my primary as well and I've been seeing him since he joined the practice - love him.
If you're not happy there, it definitely doesn't hurt to shop around a little. Good luck with your pregnancy!
I really liked Dr. Haddock, too. He seemed supportive of my choices and general attitude I had about pregnancy and birth.
who did you have at chesapeake womens? I also used them
