High-Risk Pregnancy

Hyperemesis

Just curious if any of you either TTC # 2 or pregnant with #2 experienced hyperemesis during your first pregnancy. If so, are you worried about going through it again or are you experiencing it with #2? I had it with my daughter - she's currently 18 months and we're thinking about TTC soon, so I am trying to gather feedback

Re: Hyperemesis

  • I had severe hyperemesis with my oldest son. Hospital stays, IV's around the clock for weeks, and finally a picc line to feed me food through a bag. I was terrified the second time around but knew I wanted at least two children. I was so lucky to not have it with my second son, so we went for a third. I have had it again with my third. So its hard to tell if you will have it. Each pregnancy is soo different. Oh and my oldest is a boy and this one is a girl, so gender didnt matter for me.

  • I had the same problems. I lost 12 pounds and couldnt work, had visiting nurses, hospital stays, and a mid-line IV until a few months before I had her. I feel like they say its worse for First time Mom's and Mothers of girls.. maybe thats why you had it the first time, not the second and again with your daughter..
  • My SIL had Hyperemesis with both of my nephews. She had hospital stays, IVs, and picc lines with both. My youngest nephew she actually had it worse with and longer, into her 8th month.

  • I had moderate HG with all three of my pregnancies. My first was a m/c at 14 weeks that had nothing to do with the HG. My second was pretty mild. A few IV's and LOTS of Zofran. My third was the worst (but still minor compared to most) I lost about 15 lbs by mid-second try but was up 10 lbs by the time he was born. Both of mine are boy so I don't know that sex has too much to do with it. We are thinking about trying for one more baby but I feel a lot better going into it this time. My dog didn't understand how miserable I was until after I had him. I've seen her for regular stuff since he was born (he's one now) and she says she will be much more pro-active this time. We have a plan so to speak. I can be stubborn and almost a bit of a martyr. I never wanted to complain to her or get help because I didn't want anyone to see what I perceived to be weaknesses so I didn't get help, fluids, IV meds etc until I was ungodly miserable. Next time she has said that she will see me more often, do closer monitoring and get me set up with home meds/fluids/HHC at the first sign that I need it. Her willingness to be pro-active is the only reason that I am even thinking #3 is a possibility for us.

My best suggestion is to find a doc that will help you, have a rough plan set up a head of time and have whatever house and childcare help you think you will need lined up early.

HG is awful but if you really want to go for #2 than know that you can do it but arm yourself with all the support you can get.

Also babycenter.com had an HG message board that is pretty helpful.

    Best of luck.
