Cloth Diapering

Bumgenius question!

Hi all-

I am a FTM looking to cloth diaper. I am trying to buy an all in one that comes in a one size fits all. So far, it seems like Bumgenius has the best reviews. Do you agree? Also, in the 4.0s they have the standard 4.0 and the elemental 4.0. Do you notice a difference? It it worth it to spend the extra $$ for the elemental 4.0?

TIA  for you insight!

Re: Bumgenius question!

  • 4.0's are a pocket diaper while the Elemental is a true AIO.  We love our Elementals!  They take a lot longer to line dry so I wouldn't make them my whole stash but we have about 6 and they work great!

My DS is sensitive to the lining in regular 4.0's so we use them at home when we know we'll be changing him a lot.  I once put him in one for a 3 hour car ride and he had the worst rash afterwards.  He'd never reacted before.

I would also look into Bummis Easy Fits.  Those are our other favorite!  The insert is attached but comes out of the pocket in the washer.  You still have to stuff it back in but since it's attached there's no hunting for inserts, etc. I hope that makes sense :)  Oh, with the Easy Fits you can also add extra absorbancy in the pocket which you can't do with the Elementals.

  • The standard 4.0 is a pocket diaper that you have to stuff - not an aio.  The Elemental is a natural organic fabric (no synthetic absorbant material).  If you want an aio it is the elemental.   BTW, cottonbabies is coming out with a new diaper in december.  It is a flap style aio.

  • I?m a BG supporter and my stash is 100% BG diapers.  I have a mix of one size, all in ones, one size and elemental?s but all have been purchased used or on the clearance page from Cottonbabies.  The 4.0?s are pocket diapers you stuff inserts in for absorbency where elementals are ready to go once dry.  The 4.0?s are ready to use after one washing and the Elementals need several washes b4 they ready to use.

Keep in mind that the OS BG diapers do not fit newborns.  You will need to figure out something until baby is about 10 pounds.  I?m going with a newborn rental from www.cutiepoops.com for the first few weeks b/c it?s more cost effective for me to rent NB diapers than purchase XS BG?s or purchase pre folds and covers.

  • I think the Elementals are worth the extra money.  DS developed an irritation to the suede cloth of the 4.0s so we can't use them.  Also, it's easier to get stink out of the cotton in Elementals, than it is in microfiber.

They may take longer to dry, but if you're looking for an AIO, I wouldn't go the pocket route.  Stuffing pockets, while isn't difficult, can be tedious if you want a wash and wear diaper.

ETA: Cotton Babies had Elemental seconds on their site earlier this week for only $17! not sure if they still do but that's a great deal.

  • We do about half elementals and half 4.0s. I don't really have a preference. They both work very well for us. I'd say get a few of each and give them a whirl. I do recommend bumgenius. We've tried tons of different kids and bumgenius is by far the winner. Tots Bots easy fits (as mentioned above) are a close second.

I think the best thing about the elementals and the tots bots is that they're very trim and don't give my kid the "ghetto bootie" look. :-)
