Trouble TTC

Where did Ureaplasma come from anyway?

So I tested positive back in May. I was told my spouse didn't need to be treated.

I was hoping to go ahead with IUI this month, but the more I read about UU, I think I should be recultured.

My RE said it won't bother the insemination. I didn't really like that answer.

Any thoughts? Anyone else having these problems?

TIA

Re: Where did Ureaplasma come from anyway?

  • Your doctor is wrong. Ureaplasma is highly contagious and gets passed back and forth between partners. If you were treated and your husband wasn't you probably got it back the next time you had sex. I was diagnosed with it 12 years ago and my DH and I got treated for 1 week on doxycycline. But that wasn't even enough to get rid of it because last summer I decided to check if it was still there (because I am still not PG) and sure enough we still had it. We both had to take doxycycline for 1 month (no sex during this time) and now it is officially gone.

I would think reevaluate whether you want to get an IUI if you still have Ureaplasma (or may still have it) because even if you get PG there is a high chance of miscarriage because the bacteria has been pushed into your uterus during the IUI.

I have done a lot of research on this bacteria and not enough doctors take it seriously when studies have shown it to be present in many "unexplained infertility" couples.

I would go back to your doctor and request a re test and if its still there make sure you and DH go on antibiotics to treat it. GL

  • I was positive. Because I was positive, my RE didn't even test DH; we both just got treated with doxycycline. We were then retested, and both were negative. So both of you need to be tested and cleared before any treatments.

  • I tested positive for it and my husband and I both had to take doxy for 10 days.  I did end up getting a natural BFP the next month (after 18 unsuccessful months), unfortunately it ended in m/c (likely due to blood clotting factor).  I was re-cultured after the m/c and it was gone, so one round of doxy took care of it for us.  I would definitely treat it before going forward.
