Re: Artificial Christmas Trees

  • We bought ours a couple of days before Christmas the first x-mas we were together...it was already marked down a ton and was about $20.  We got it because 1) it was prelit with white lights; 2) the price was fabulous, and 3) it was tall (6 or 8 ft) but slender, which worked perfect for the small place we had it in before we moved and we had space to store it year round.

Now that we have a lot more room, we may upgrade to a larger/fuller tree.  I recommend a pre-lit tree (so much nicer and easier than having to string lights every year). I would recommend looking at some in person (Home Depot, Lowes, Ace, Costco, Target) and then shopping around, including online, for the best prices.  For large/full trees, you can spend a couple hundred.  Also, you should look into what color lights you want and if you want "regular" lights or the super bright LCDs.  (For reference, I have the Ace ad in front of me right now and a 7ft prelit tree is $129.99)

  • Because of the way our house is, I have a hard time not wanting two trees every year.  One in the front of the house in the window, and one by the fireplace in our cozier den area.  So, when I saw a 7' pre lit artificial tree at Home Depot a few days after Christmas for 75% off, I went for it (two years ago).  It's the one that goes in the front of the house, and then we cut one down for our den.  I believe we paid $30 maybe?  But again, 75% off.  If it's something you don't for sure want/need for THIS Christmas, I would wait until after Christmas to buy one reduced significantly.

  • We bought ours from a fancy outdoor store in Palo Alto (that coverts to all Christmas tree stuff at the holidays) during their post-Christmas sale.  It's original price was quite pretty steep, but we got it half off.  But it paid for itself in about 3 years.  We got one unlighted, because if the strand goes out on a pre-lit tree that has them woven into the branch construction, you're stuck with having to add new lights on top of dead lights.  We leave our lights on it when we pack it up though, so we don't have to restring it every year.  It's 9' tall and looks very real (but we have to take the time to fan out each and every branch).
