High-Risk Pregnancy

DVT question...

So I was just wondering if any of you have experienced lower back pain associated with DVT? I have an extensive clot in my right leg starting at my belly and extending down to my knee. I've been on Lovenox for over a month now and everything has seemed to be going great. The excruciating pain that was in my leg is completely gone which was making me think my body was absorbing the clot. One of my first symptoms with this DVT was low back pain on the right side. Well, starting last night that same pain is back but not near as severe. It still is pretty uncomfortable. I really have no desire to tell my doctor because they keep tossing around the word 'surgery'. This surgery would be purely done to suck the clot out of my leg but because I'm pregnant they said it would be a big risk. So, basically in my mind I'm giving the surgery suggestion a big hell no. I've decided not to say anything to my doctor unless the pain starts radiating down my leg like last time. But, I was just curious if anybody has ever had this similar situation. I'm almost 13 weeks pregnant and I just want my little baby to be safe.

Re: DVT question...

  • I have not had exactly the same situation, but I can tell you my experience.  My DVT was actually several years before I got pregnant and it was less extensive than yours (back of knee to mid-calf on the left leg).  I had some follow-up scans after treatment that showed the clot was resolved with no remaining blockage, but in both pregnancies I have still had aches and pains and extra swelling in that left leg.  I think the veins just get damaged by the clot and pregnancy puts an extra strain on them.  Still, if you are worried definitely go to your doctor and get it checked out.  Better safe than sorry with this one!

  • My clot was belly to knee (left leg) and my first symptoms were pain in my left inner thigh and pain in my lower back (left side.)
I agree with pp that it is probably nothing, but I do think you need to have it checked out.  I know it is really scary, but if the clot is growing you need to know even if you decide to opt out of the surgery (they would probably up your dosage of blood thinners and admit you into the hospital until the clot stabilizes.)
Just think of how great it will feel to get the scan and hear that its just residual clot and no new clot is forming.  It will give you peace of mind and let you focus on having a happy and stress-free pregnancy!
Good luck and please keep us posted...

  • Thanks for all the feedback, I hope to God it's nothing. The pain is still there so I broke down and called my doctor today. They want me to come in and make sure everything is okay. The bad part is my OB's office is closed today. But, I'm going to see my doctor that has been monitering my clot. I'm starting to get freaked out and my husband is freaking out and that's not helping anything. They said it could possibly be because my uterus is getting bigger and is putting pressure on my clot, which is an issue because obviously my uterus is obviously just going to keep getting bigger. Hopefully, everything will be fine...
