High-Risk Pregnancy

Cervical Length @ 14 weeks

I have been concerned with my cervical length due to a leep procedure I had 10 years ago.

I am in my first pregnancy at 14 weeks, and just had my cervical length checked with an abdominal ultrasound yesterday and it came out at 3.5cm. The technician said this was  within the average range, that anything below 3 is of concern,  and that it was perfectly good and normal.

I was just wondering from everyone out there if this seems accurate? There are so many things you read online and I don't want to get myself worried over nothing.

Thank you!

Re: Cervical Length @ 14 weeks

  • Hi - I had a LEEP about 12 years ago too so I was seeing a MFM throughout this entire pregnancy for cervical length.  I didn't even ask what my length was until about 24 weeks, and I was at 3.2 cm then.  I now get it checked every week because of pre-term labor, and the shortest it's been is 2.6 and the longest is 3.9cm.  Keep in mind, it will fluctuate.  The most important thing is to keep those appts and get it checked regularly and if you notice anything out of the ordinary, report it.  The only reason I found out I was in PTL was because I had some unusual discharge that I normally would have ignored, but my MFM had just said the day before "if you have unusual discharge call your OB."  I'm so glad I did!  But despite the PTL contractions, my cervix has held up just fine.

So the short answer according to my OB and MFM is yes, - anything over 3cm is good, less than 3 is a little concern and less than 2.5 is a little more concern.  :)

Good Luck - wishing you a nice long, strong cervix for the remainder of your pg.

  • Try not to stress too much momma! I know that is def easier said than done though. I go through so much anxiety at each appt.

The only thing I would add is that you might want to see about doing trans-vag ultrasounds. According to my dr it gives a more accurate length than trans-abdom. ultrasounds. Also, just remember that each tech measures just a little bit differently so that can account for slight (very slight) changes in the length week to week. How often do they plan to monitor your length? Starting at 16 weeks, I will be monitored every 1-2 weeks.

     Good luck!!

  • stop stressing! 3.5 cm is beautiful. I have had many many cervical length checks - only due to preterm contractions but my doc has repeatedly told me no worries over 3, some worries 2-3 cm and less than 2 cm is when they put you on your rump to stay (if you are still far from your due date). I worried and obsessed but that number is good. It feels better when you have 2 in a row that are over 3 cm though.
